Hey all,

I bought some cardboard boxes and plastic trays for packing/storing all my 9mm and .223 rounds in ammo can's for long term storage/usage.   My 9mm boxes fit neatly packed into a .50 cal ammo can, each can holds 1000 rounds of 9mm.

However when I went to pack my .223 boxes into a .50 cal ammo can, it will only fit 8 boxes (400 Rounds), instead of the 10 boxes (500 Rounds) that I had planed on.

Now I'm rethinking the idea and wondering if there are other boxes/packaging options out there for .223?   I found the stripper clip sleeves on ebay, about $0.70 per box (I have plenty of stripper clips),  does anyone know how many of these will fit into a .30 or .50 cal ammo can?  Do they fit tight?

Are there any boxes available that are like the federal XM193 packaging?

Like This:

Before anyone posts "Just store them loose",  That's not what I want to do, so there's no need to post anything like that.

Thanks all,

-Masta

The military gets 840 rds of 5.56mm in a 50 cal can when they're on 10 rd clips in bandoleers and cardboard sleeves (you should get a few more in there without the bandoleers.) You'll get over 900 rds in a can if you buy the factory loaded Federal XM193 20rd cartons.

This is what I have. I absolutely love them, the cardboard is very heavy duty.
I also like the fact that one box is one mag. So its very easy and convenient to go to the range.

I can put about 32 of the bandoleer sleeves with 30 rounds on stripper clips each in a can, I took one sleeve apart and used it as a stencil, and make my own using thin card board, I would think since the 20 round boxes are smaller, you should be able to fit more, with some arranging.

Ya can put a lot of 5.56 in ammo cans but i prefer to keep my cans light so not so heavy to carry  to bug out if needed.
I like those skinny 7.62 cans and stripper clips total of 540 rds. Here: Small can 540 rds
And a big can that 1140 5.56 blanks came in 27 of the 20 rd box's for 540 here: Big can

I ordered 200 of these boxes today!

Should be much better then the boxes with the trays, they were just way too big!

I was going to go the route of the stripper clip sleeves, but they are almost 3x the price of these 30-round boxes and I'd have to load all the rounds on stripper clips.

I've kind of gotten away from stripper clips as I have a StripLula and I can just stack 10 rounds in the StripLula and feed them as if they were on stripper clips with out spending the time to load all the stripper clips and having the little brass tabs break off all the time.

I was kind of hoping for some 20-round boxes as I have gotten away from 30-round mag's as they are just too long for bench/bi-pod shooting.  I have changed to 20-round P-Mag's and love 'em!

Hate to bring up an old thread but...I am..
At first I was planning to use these for 223:

I use a similar thing for 9mm and I like it, however, I need to minimize the # of ammo cans I use so this won't work out.

So, earlier in this thread these were posted:

Love those, price is right and will seem to work fine.

However, the appeal of the stripper clips has me torn between the two options.  My main goal is long term storage.  There will be a large desicant package in the ammo can with the stored rounds.

I have found the repack kits on ebay but I didn't know if there was a better place to get them.

Here are a few questions on the stripper clips/boxes:
The stripper clips are brass or steel?
How bad is the broken tab problem?
Do they break easily?
If they do break, are the clips no longer functional?
Once in the cardboard boxes, do they stack well?
Can someone tell me the dimensions of a packed box (30rnds on 3 clips)?

How bad is the broken tab problem?  The tab's are on the brass part, you can only bend it soo many times before it snaps off.. How many?  Not sure, I'd say less then 10 for sure.
Do they break easily?  Other then the brass taps, the rest of the stripper clips are plenty strong.
If they do break, are the clips no longer functional?  The little tabs are just bent up to stop rounds from sliding out of the stripper clips.  If the clips hold the round(s) tight enough, they wont move with or with out the tabs
Once in the cardboard boxes, do they stack well?  Someone else will have to answer this, I don't know

I ended up buying the boxes, first thing I found is that the top flap that closes the box is REALLY hard to close with out crushing the flap.  I ended up shaving off the flap so that it would close properly.  I don't know how many times these boxes will be re-usable, I'm thinking probably less then 5 times, but I could be wrong.   Time will tell.

For me it came down to the cost.  The look pack 30-round boxes are quite a bit cheaper then the stripper clip re-pack boxes.   As I mentioned I have a StripLULA which I can load loose rounds in to load in a mag, so putting all the rounds on stripper clips is kind of a waste of time for me.

I am going to have to try some other size ammo can's for the 30-round boxes as a .50 cal can doesn't really fit the boxes well.  They fit obviously, but there's alot of slack/room in the can and I like mine to fit pretty tight.

Can you tell me the dimensions of those boxes you have?

I am stopping using 50 cal ammo cans for storage, there just never seems to be enough room and I end up having to use 2-3 for one project anyway.  I have since switched to 40MM ammo cans.  They don't fit in the safe, but at least all my crap fits.

I think dryflash3 uses Stripper Clips and I was hoping he would have some input.
