We gave some Zero 9MM 147gr JHP’s a try in some Clear Ballistics gel. The impact velocity in bare gel was 1059fps and had 16.5 inches of penetration. As you can see expansion was ok and it retained 100% weight. In heavy clothing the impact velocity was 1035fps and penetrated 21 inches. Expansion was minimal.

Neat.  I like these bullets (not for sd obviously)

Remember a bullet that shreads like this does major internal damage. Disagree about being good for sd.

What are your thoughts on why you got 5" more penetration through thick clothing with slightly less velocity?

It would be interesting to see the results of these Zero 147's compared to a 147 HST or other 147 defense round. Any chance of running a side by side???

My guess would be the expansion effects that dynamic.  He had less exp. with the clothing so it didn't have as much drag.

Like AR-Bossman said, less expansion = less drag.

I don't have any 147gr SD ammo to run a comparison with.

My first thought would be that thick clothing would be more drag than gel. Guess it would depend on what clothing.

5Pins, where did you find gel?

Is this the same clear ballistics gel that did NOT perform like the standard gel used for testing?

I understand that clear gel isn’t the same as real ballisticgel but it’s cheaper, easier to work with and doesn’t smell as bad.

Not a scientist, but I that photo looks GREAT!

I shoot a lot of Zero bullets for match loads. So if the zombies attack when I am on the way home from a match I can feel confident.

I've often wondered what my 9 major rounds would look like in gel. 115gr Precision Delta's traveling at 1500fps.

I had to push the velocity a little higher then you may find in a typical 147gr load. I’m thinking of dropping it down under 1000fps and see how well they do.
