I am going to buy a Shotgun and i found a Winchester 1300. Is this a good gun?

I recently won a Winchester model 1300 Defender and I have been quite happy with it so far. This was the first Winchester shotgun I have owned and I don't see anything to complain about. If you are getting a good deal then I would say go for it.

Winchester 1300 here. More people go with Remington 870, but I don't know why.

1300 Defender here as well. God, it is a great gun. It has the slickest action of any of the pumps I've tried. People tout the 870 but I don't know why. Somebody once said the problem with the 1300 was the aluminum receiver until I reminded them that our beloved ARs use an aluminum receiver. The 590 has a novelty factor to it but didn't operate as nicely as the 1300 for me. Best shotgun for the money in my book.

I've had my 1300 for about 8 years now. It's a great shotgun to say the least. The action is tight and smooth as silk. Not to bash the 870 but it just feels sloppy to me. I wish more tactical accessories were available for it. The only thing i've done to it was attach a Galati sling to it.

.233 doesn't abuse the receiver quite like 3" magnums will. Just a thought.

I'm the other winner of the Winchester model 1300 defender...Outstanding so far with zero complaints! The only modifications I have done with it are: send out the barrel to VangComp for their barrel porting modification and replacing the slide and pistol grip with a Knoxx/Hogue Recoil absorbing stock and slide set.

i have the FN police shotgun. its a 1300 defender with choke tubes and rifle sights. i love it. $269 NIB out the door. cant be beat.

Are you going to bring your gun to the BRC, I would like to see how your accessories work on your gun. I cheaped out with one of those universal buttstock with pistol grip. I have had zero problems but I am curious to see some different ideas.

Thanks for the # about the stock screw. I had it in my hand in about a week.

Definately good gun.I have ALWAYS been a Wincester man myself.I personally put 5 to 6 thousand round thru the gun and no problems.Definately one of my better guns. I was thinking of getting another with a pistol grip.hotgun.gif

If I'm not mistaken, isn't the 1300 an update of the immortal Model 12? Talk about a great shotgun!

I've owned a 1300 - if a shotgun was still my primary defense arm for home, a Defender with Federal Tactical(#4)Buckshot would be my 1st choice.

The 1300 has no relationship to the Mod.12 other than they are both shotguns.
In my time as an armorer, the only problems I found with Win. shotguns was the plastic trigger group housing. The trigger guard tended to break. Then again, the MP's seemed to take weapon abuse to a new level. All in all the 1300 is plenty serviceable.
The 1300's bolt locks to a barrel extension, akin to the AR15, so 3" mags really only beat up the shooter because of the lighter weight of aluminum.

Got one. Love it.

Bought it with the pistol grip, and replaced it with the Choate full stock. Feeds Aguila 1-1/2" slugs with no ache, and works like a horse.

My only beef with it is the safety - I used to have a Mossberg 500 and I got attached to the thumb safety. Anyone know of an Ambi safety (and a metal trigger group, now that it has been mentioned...)

Yeah, it'll come to the BRC with me. I also purchased the Aimtech scope mount from Brownells as well as a cheapie BSA red-dot - looks cool as hell on top but I took it off in favor of a Sidesaddle mount. My next mod will be to send it to Mac's refinishing to be done up in OD GREEN

Great gun, good price. I just wish we didn't have those laws against semi-autos...then again, I could break them and no one would know...it's not like they actually enforce those laws.

Well, I love my defender 1300 with a straight pistol grip and wood fore grip, especially for only 180.00 at walmart!

Have an 870 also, great gun, as well as my 1100 rem but the defender is the one for short close quarters, 9 rounds of 00 buck, what more do you want!

Well, what do you plan to do w/ it? Go hunting, shoot clays? Home defence only?

If you want to hunt, shoot clay, then go w/ the long barrel...(Turkey). If it's just home defence, then get the Defender.... unless it's the Defender package that comes w/ the longer barrel too.

The 1300 camp defender will take choke tubes. The camp defender barrel has rifle sights and is about 4" longer than the standard 1300 Defender. It would probably cheaper to buy a 1300 barrel that has choke tubes than to modify one...
