Instead of telling you guys what weapons I'm thinking about buying and having you guys give your reason why or why not, how bout I tell you what I own, and you tell me what I need to further add to my collection.
This is my first year into firearms, so don't flame me on how small my collection is! Here we go: HK USP .45 w/ match trigger Bushmaster 20" flattop (A2 sights) Benelli Nova-ghost rings, mag ext.,anti-recoil Model 94 Winchester 30-30 Ruger 10/22 w/cheap bushnell scope 1944 Turkish Mauser 1947 K-31 Swiss Well, what do I need next!?  |

Funny you guys said Garand, cause I was thinking about one of those.
The only thing that scares me is ammo. 30-06 surplus is hard to come by nowadays. I already have a expensive ammo weapon (k-31) I don't need another. Any idea's on the ammo? |

OK, the Garand is a good idea, but you NEED a .22 cal pistol. You can never have enough of these. You can practice your pistol shooting without spending the money on .45 ammo. I would suggest a Ruger MKII, Colt Woodsman, S&W Model 41 or any High Standard semi-auto. Ruger is probably your cheapest choice. If you decide High Standard, get the oldest one you can find in good shape.

Very good Idea. I really do need a .22 pistol, its just hard to spend $200 on a .22 pistol. Why the oldest one? Should I buy a .22 handgun used or new? |

You could get it in .308. There is still cheap surplus ammo in .308. Of course I think that is just plain WRONG, Garands should be 30-06. I don't have a .22 pistol- spend the $ 200 on more .45 ammo I say. A garand would be a good choice, but I think you need either 1.-300 weatherby magnum Remington 700 bdl with a good scope-or- 2.-a Charter Arms bulldog in .44 special. |

Why only one? Buy five, then you'll have a lifetime, probably yours and your children's, of spare parts. A friend just paid $30 each for five. I think that was from Century.
Sounds like you need a Turk Mauser. I paid about 3.5 cents per round the last time I bought ammo.z |

Damn. For your first year of firearms, it's pretty damn impressive. But to augment your collection, how about...
...an accurate bolt action .308 like a Rem 700 or Savage and / or a .308 semi automatic like a Springfield M1A? Both / either can be used for regular use with relatively cheap surplus ammo OR you can really reach out and touch someone with match grade ammo. AND you wouldn't have to find a Garand in .308 (?!?!?) Both / either would have to be topped with serious optics to be truly worthwhile. ...a compact pistol like Glock 30 or 36? I've got a USP (40 S&W) and was considering a USP Compact as backup but it's not really that compact. So now I'm looking for a Glock 27. But since you're shooting a .45 ACP pistol, the Glock 30 or 36 will let you shoot and not have to buy different caliber ammo (if that matters to you). ...a good revolver like a S&W 686? Everyone should have a revolver. Plinking with .38 SPL is just plain fun and, when you might need it, .357 is a nice, serious round. ...a .22LR pistol like a Ruger MKII? Always fun (and cheap) to shoot. It's a great way to introduce others to shooting. ...a .50BMG rifle like a Barrett M82A1? Because you never know when you have to shoot something a mile away.

A 22 pistol is a good idea, but you really NEED a good scoped bolt gun, probably in 308. I don't know if you live in a CCW state, but that HK may be too big for an "always" gun. Then, you obviously have not yet discovered fine 1911s. Actually, you are pretty well covered right now, but what fun is that? Watch-Six

Rumor has it that the older the High Standard, the better they shoot. I have a H-D Military that shoots circles around my S&W. You can't go wrong with the Supermatic either though. Look at used if you have a problem with spending cash on a .22 pistol. There is a lot of really good deals on used .22 semi-autos out there. My Smith is a 22A (cheaper version of the 41) and I gave $130 for it. The only drawback to it is that it needs to be clean or it will fail to feed properly. Admittedly, I abuse the hell out of this gun. Wear it mowing, beating around the river, usually dont clean it till it starts bugging up on me. |

Let's see...
Combat pistol, check. CQC combat rifle, check. Combat shotgun, check. Scrub/truck gun, check. 22 auto. rifle, check. Old bolt rifles, check. I agree that you need a .308 battle rifle. I would lean toward the M1A, like Ronin. For some real fun, get a .308 bolt action battle rifle, like an Enfield No 7. (Mk?) or a Spanish FR8. A nice accurate .308 bolt with some good optics is a good idea, like a Remington 700 VS. I have the PSS and it is a beast, but accurate. Can you tell I like the .308? I see a destinct lack of a 9mm in your collection. Check around, there are too many to list, so just shop to suit your taste. Murder, you obviously suffer from the same strange disease that has infected my collection. I have 7 firearms in my collection, including my wife's 2 and none are chambered the same. A .300 win mag or the .300 ultra mag i have both of these in bolt action and am quite happy although ammo is gonna cost ya about $30 for a box of 20 rounds depending on the type of ammo you buy for example 180 grain silver ballistic tip and so on.

Awesome feedback guys!
OK you guys are going to drive my wallet (and my girlfriend) nuts. To be honest, I wanted to wait till I got into handloading (few years) to get a high powered rifle. The caliber I choose is .308 or (since I'll be reloading) .300 winmag. Already decided that REM 700 will do doubt be the rifle I buy. I've been kicking around the idea of a Garand or a M1A but it just hasen't developed into more then that. I just can't get into old american battle rifle's due to their cost. I owned a Glock 17 but loved my HK so much I sold it and used to funds to pay for 1/2 of the AR. Funny a 686 SW was mentioned, because that will be the revolver I buy when I'm ready to buy a Revolver. A compact handgun has be the most realistic idea and almost bought an compact USP in .40 or .357 sig, but really, the HK compact isn't a compact weapon. I think what I'm going to do is buy my dad's sig P230 (.380), THAT's my idea of a compact weapon, it can fit in any pocket but has a grip that is big enough for my hands! (don't like the idea of a .380 though) This is driving me crazy!!! |

Great first year. Expand your horizons. Remember, any (well almost) firearm is worth trying. With that in mind.
1)1911, I still prefer Colt. 2)Magnum revolver, S&W is hard top beat. 3)Has anyone mentioned a .22 pistol?! 4)PPK, it was good enough for 007. 5)Beretta 92, great double action auto. 6)FN-FAL, 90% of the free world can't be wrong. 7)AK, 90% of the oppressed can't be wrong. 8)An auto shotgun, Benelli's nice, as is Rem. |

Remington 700 chambered in 25.06. head shots at 300 yards....
 My new NEF .223. Headshots on groundhogs at 150 yards(so far) I've only had it 3 days....Fun, fun, fun!!!!

Murder: The 686 is a great wheel-gun choice.
 Mine has the 4" barrel, shoots great. BUT- the ammo is pricey, unless you shoot the .38s (they aren't cheap either) I have a Browning Buckmark .22. It's REAL accurate and you can have fun shooting all day long for under $10.00. It's also a great gun for getting "virgins" to try shooting. The safe is also a VERY GOOD idea-no point in blowing all that cash on guns in order to have some lowlife ASSCLOWN (heh,heh) steal all your hard-earned fun. Safes aren't foolproof, but it will stop 95% of the theives, and greatly slow down the rest. Luckily, my neighbors are all hunters/shooters also, so we watch out for one another when someone leaves town. And yeah, my ammo requirements vary greatly also. My inventory consists of: .22, .357, .380, 9mm, .40S&W, .270, .223, 30-30, 12ga, 20ga, .50 black powder. I'm ALWAYS on the lookout  for ammo sales. Fortunately, the girlfriend shoots and hunts, too.

This is what I have bought since last Aug.
 Bushy Shorty AR Rem 700 VS .308 Rem 870 12GA Mil-Spec 1911 .45 HK USP .45 Ruger MK II .22 Ruger 10/22 Not Shown Kahr K9 I currently have a Mil-Spec 1911 Operator on layaway. I was trying to decide on what I want next. I finally decided on a Remington 700 Sendero in .300 Win Mag. My wife was going to buy it for me for Christmas but I cant wait. I really like .45's and long range rifles. There is nothing quite like laying down next to your rifle out in the middle of a quiet field and shooting targets 600 + yards out. Just thought I would give you some ideas. Dont forget that optics and mounts always cost more than the rifle I think after the Sendero its back to more AR's and a Semi 308 (M1A, SAR-8). |

 30-06 is still available, and if that's a problem you could always rebarrel it to .308(supposedly blasphemy) edited to add: What no SKS or AK? anything that eats WOLF ammo? did I mention how much I miss my SAR-1 when I sold it? |

If you want a .308 rifle, pay the extra money and get a Stoner SR-25. Mine has a 24: Obermeyer Military Match bbl and shoots .25" groups at 100 yrds. Hell, if it's good enough for the SEALS, it's good enough for me!
I also agree with the poster above who said no matter what you get (with some exceptions), when you buy a firearm, it's a good day! |

I'm in my first year too.
There are many GREAT suggestions so I'll just give you my .02. I LOVE my S&W 622 (looks like a skinny 1911) .22, can shoot all day and not go broke. I got mine through an estate sale, I think there kind of hard to find. I know it's just pop pop pop but box after box of 40cal gets expensive. In 9mm you might want to look at a CZ75b, I like mine very much. And finally, yah, gotta have an AK. I've got the VEPR2 in .223 from Robinson Armaments. It will happily eat anything. It has the heavier RPK receiver and is all crome lined. Much more accurate than most people expect from an AK. Also, it's all black with composite furniture and just looks mean. It even pisses off some of the bolt action guys at the range. Not that I want to, it just does. Hope this is helpful. |

I'll echo a few others.
1. An MBR. The DSA Stg58A FAL in .308 is the best value for the money. $5 mags. 3-4" groups at 200 yards with cheap surplus ammo. 2. A Garand. You don't have to shoot it often, but its a piece of American history, in limited supply, AND THEY AIN'T MAKING NO MORE!!!! 3. An Oly pistol caliber upper. Just plain fun!!!! 4. DEFINITELY a bolt scoped .308 tactical rifle. 5. A .22 cal pistol. Good to train newbies, cheap to shoot yourself (I gotta get one myself) 6. THIS MAY BE THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE HERE - ANY assault rifle or handgun that you can buy in a private party sale. Start savin' yer pennies - cuz you KNOW it ain't gonna be just one. |

OK I've figured it out!
I'm getting an M1! It really makes sense, due to wanting one REALLY bad, and also the supply drying up, I figure I'll just buy it now and not have to pay a premium later. I'm in the process of signing up for a CMP auth. range, so I'll be qualified for CMP and I'll pick one up!! After that, will be Compact Handgun. (still undecided) After that will be a .22lr pistol. Then after that will be a REM 700 in .308 or .300, with a Leupold or Kahles scope. Hopefully a SW 686 will be thrown into the mix as well. Thanks for everyones feedback, its funny how alot of us have the same taste in firearms! Good taste might I add.

Just be ready for a long wait on the M1. I sent out my paperwork to the CMP yesterday and I've been hearing 3-4 month wait on all rifles because of the backlog of M1903 sales! |
