As it stands now I have a saiga 308 22" model with al the parts needd to convert her (match trigger, Ace stock, galil grip, KVAR side mount, IOR Super M2 scope, Also, seven (7) that's right SEVEN mags that cost me more than the rifle) into a decent rifle.

I just decided to lose all my AK's though so now I'm considerring other paths.

Looking to keep it SIMPLE. that's teh name of the game. Whatever I get, I want the IOR to go on it. she's a 6x super M2 with the dragunov rangfinding reticle cammed for the 308 round. I have TONS of match ammo, so all I need is the rifle.

I'm thinking of a 20" FN PBR that I found on sturm comes with bipod at 620$. owner getting sub moa groups with the same amo I have.

Other chioces are an AR type rifle, but that makes things more 'complicated' and more expensicve.

i'm nterested in ideas along this line, too
i've been looking into a .308 also, and am considering a g3 type rifle

Have you thought about a JLD PTR 91? Great rifle and you can find them for $700-750.

mainly want something capable of sending something larger than a mk262 long range. doesn't have to be semi auto, or large capacity, just accurate as hell and rugged. Saiga sure is rugged and can be made preeeeeeeeeeeeeety accurate, but accurate as hell?

about the AK's, there's nothing my cheapest AR can't do better than my most expensive AK. we can argue day and night over the issues but that's what it is to me. I have 4 AR's and even before that when I had 10, my cheapest was ten times teh rifle my best AK was.

i accept that there are AK people and AR people... I love my ak's... even my wasr! to each his own.

If you are thinking about a PBR make sure it is a new one and not the old design. Long rail on the new ones and they have the Pre-64 Wenchester action, old ones dont.

whu? now you're KILLING me. I thought PBR's don't copme with full rails?

Also why would I not want the old one if folks are getting sub moa groups with it?

How about a DSA FAL-type or a M14 clone Springfield Armory M1A or LRB? All of these rifle sre not cheap, with out the door prices on the order of $1,500 - $2000 per.

Why don't you just buy a Remington Model 700 and be done with it?

You could get a darn ADL for $300 and it would shoot better than most semi-auto choices you have.

No thanks on the g3. had a ptr. was heavy as all hell and I never liked the idea of a rifle in blowback mode, rollers or not. call it paranoia - the system obviously works and works well - but I gotta have a rotary bolt.

and that f'er was HEEEEEEEEEEEAVY. 'course I did have about 20 lb.s of queer gear on it!

If you don't mind a challenge, I'd suggest a DSA FAL or a Armalite AR10A4.

FAL rifles are reliable, quite durable, but mounting optics can be challenging. I'd start with the 18'' Congo Rifle, but with a lightweight alloy lower, STD DSA black furniture (maybe upgrade to a penguin buttstock), no bipod, DSA heavy duty FAL scope mount, I bet you could keep it under 9lbs and under $1600 if you have a good FFL.

had a DSA carbine. also heavy as hell, also don't likethe operating system though it ALSO is well proven.

The AR10 is tempting as all hell. In fact, I'd probably get one if i didn't have all the parts for the saiga conversion already. saiga should be minute of angle, reliable as hell, and wicked comfortable when Tony's done with it.

granted no hi-caps, but that's not a requirement for this rifle. I've got a tack driving custom 18 inch SPR -type AR that can take care of all but the longest shots. and even then it can shoot on target I'm just not sure the round can do its part at say 600+ yards (I'm thinking 'wolverines' here folks! :-). That's where this rifle comes in.

really.... no less than twenty pounds.

BandT handguard, BandT low long scope mount, IOR M2 on ARMS 22L's, Williams Set Trigger, Authentic MSG90 stock, Arms bipod adaptor with harris bipod, TDI vfg for the 21-ish look, 20 HK alloy mags and 10 thermolds. Cost me about 3500$, shot it once, lifted it once, had a hernia, sold it.

I get the distinct impression you like planning, searching, and assembling stuff more than actually shooting it.

Nothing wrong with that. Especially for those of us who buy guns at a discount from guys who get bored with them easily

If you want a simple, rugged, subMOA rifle, buy a 700P or LTR and be done with it already.

not entirely false! I'm definitely more a collector than a shooter as I am ALWAYS collecting and only shoot about twice a week.

but in this case, I had all the components already, just wasn't sure they could all go together. Now I found someone who can do it, so that's that.

I was thinking of a Winchester PBR, but then they came out with an improved PBR and I got to thinking , why would I want the original then?

I don't have any experience with the Winchester rifle. They could be a great rifle for all I know. I will say this: last year I attended a precision rifle class at FIRE Institute with Giles Stock as the instructor. There were 15 shooters in the class. A good 50%+ of the rifles on the line were 700s. 3 or 4 700Ps, a 700LTR, 2 VSFs, even a VS. A couple other rifles were high end like AI, 2 custom guns built by Hart (both built on 700 actions), a DPMS LR308 -which puked on day 1, and my SR-25.

So, a majority of the guns present were essentially factory 700s or custom built on 700 actions. There were no Winchesters to be seen. The other point of interest, 14/15 shooters were shooting .308W. One guy with a custom Hart had a flat shooting wildcat.

Take this information for what it is worth.

Keep looking. I picked up a FN SPR new in the box on the EE for $875 shipped. 20"fluted chromed barrel, badger base, McMillian stock...tack driver.
