Maybe its because I recently acquired an M1 Carbine that has been an absolute joy to shoot

Nothing wrong with you.

I would get a M1 from the CMP. Best place, no doubt - reasonably priced, a bit of history comes with every one, and shipped direct to your door.

For M1A, I just get a blast out of my SOCOM. It is a very cool range gun. I changed out the stock and got one with a folder and a pistol grip and it is just a real blast to shoot

Get a M1 Garand from the CMP - prices start at around $350 delivered to your door and go up from there.

As to an M1A - get an older (1980's vintage were probably the best) SA Inc. They were amongst the best that SA Inc. made, and a good used one costs about the same as the new ones. There are some issues with the newer ones, they are having to make their own op rods, bolts, trigger housings, and other parts and these cast-and-machined parts are nowhere near as good as the original military contract forged-and-machined parts. M14 parts are fast drying up, so expect more SA Inc made parts on the new ones. I had a 1985 manufactured SA Inc. M1A National Match. Everything except the receiver was TRW or SA (USGI) including the barrel. It was the nicest I had owned.

I'll tell you it gets worse.
Now whenever I make a purchase of anything...I end up translating it into Garands. Like buying a new Night Force scope...."lets see...I could buy three service grades, or one correct grade and have some ammo money, or one Collector if I DON'T buy the scope"
You will never have enough..... better hurry up and get started before they're all gone!

For the sake of financial solvency, pick another hobby! J/K...I bought my first M1A (an SA scout) just over a month ago and afterwards decided that I need to set my CETME on fire and get a full sized M1A to go with it. Last week I ordered a correct grade and field grade from CMP. They haven't even arrived yet and I'm thinking it would be really cool to have a military bolt action, and suddenly an M1903A3 comes to mind. Once you start, it never, ever ends! h.gif

I bought a 1989 SA M1A with all GI parts and I was hooked. I just picked up a 1978 SA M1A NM unfired with all GI Parts save the trigger HSG and I just got a USGI one for it in the mail today. [Along with a bunch of other M-14 parts]

I don't regret one dime spent on these and with all GI parts I won't lose any money over the long haul. I can't say anything about the Socoms and such but the M-14 M1A is nicely balanced and a nice addition to a US collection. It might not be an actual GI gun but it's as close or closer to a GI gun then most ARs.

And, they are just as cool as an AR in their own way.

Best places to get them, even if they are replicas?

There is nothing wrong with you. You obviously have seen all other rifles, and are now enlightened. You have realized that the M1 and M1a are by far the most awesomest rifles ever made by man.

It is true, considering that my first handgun purchase (after many sun cycles) was a 1911

Get both
They both can shoot well.
It depends on a lot of things though accurizing ammo etc.
They still good enough from the start.

I have 3 M1s dating 1939, 1942 and 1943.
They have history and a pleasure to shoot.

My favorite is the M1A. I have an older one all GI. It is a blast to shoot. I even shoot it at 1,000 matches. It has had a lot of work done for this though.

I would have to say to get both as well.....I went as far as having my Garand Barrelled in .308 to go along with the M1A. Then I had an SA 1903 redone in .308 as well but I am stuck as I don't think .308 is gonna fit the M1 Carbine.

Springfield Armory makes a good product. They have been plagued with problems, but I own 2 and don't have any problems at all. Probably cause I bought them in the early 90's. You want to look for ones with USGI parts. It will be stamped on top of the bolt and the side of the barrel when you pull the op rod back between the handguard and stock.

I also have a Polytech which I had warbird convert to all USGI parts. If you need more info I suggest Scott Duff's book on the M14. It will have a wealth of info in there.

For Magazines USGIs are best. Cole distributing has them for a good price, also for range mags Ammoman.com has some good copies that work fine in my rifles.

Genuine NEW US GI mags at Armalite for $25 each.
If you got $$$$$
Order an LRB M14. It will be completely USGI and you can pic your barrel. You can have them build you just about anthing you want. Personally I LOVE the 18.5" bbl.
If you go SA, go used and try to buy under SN 120XXX I believe, someone confirm this will ya? I'm still kicking myself for selling my old one, but trust me, you can't go wrong with LRB. Takes about a month.

While your waiting for your M14 get your paperwork done and submitted to CMP, order the correct grade H&Rs...you'll get virtually a NEW 50 yr old Garand.
Little more recoil than the M14.....still a blast!

I have 4 M14/M1a's of varying vintage and manufacture and a 1942 Winchester M1 Garand.I love them all and will soon be adding a .308 Garand Tanker.
