Most pumps are just as fast as semi's. But you might want to look at the FN Police Autoloader.

I know the Benelli M1 Super 90 was at one time the fastest, but not sure if it still is.

Browning A5, Benelli M1 or the FN autoloader / WW SXII / Browning Gold...all damned fast. The Benelli is fast in stock form, but if you start to add weight, like a bigger operating handle, it will be slowed down some. Also, "speed" depends upon the load(s) chosen, and exactly what you are trying to do. Moving the gun a good distance from one target to another may well take much longer than the slight differences in cycle time, and heavy Buck or full slug loads will add enough recoil that any small differences may also be negated. Reliability is certainly also an issue.
If you need a really fast gun for 3 gun matches, any of the above is faster than the 1100 / 11-87, but good shooters still win with slower shotguns...the "magic" is not all in the wand.

I'd say Benelli, they used to have ads pouting they're the fastest shotgun around, never seen any counter ads.
Tom Knapp used a Benelli to break world records http://www.benelliusa.com/tom-knapp/index.tpl But Google found a counter claim: http://www.chuckhawks.com/benelli_black_eagle_take.htm "Much hay has been made of the fast-cycling time of the Benelli action. Speed shooter Patrick Flanigan became the first person in recorded history to throw 11 clay targets into the air and break each one with an individual shot before any hit the ground on July 6, 2005, using a Winchester Super X-2. Flanigan's testing showed that not only was the Winchester Super X-2 the world's fastest cycling shotgun, but even the Browning A-5 handily out-cycled the Benelli. Cycle time is hardly a factor in the field, but fast recovery from recoil for the next bird certainly can be." Beats me, dont own a Winchester Super X-2, I own a Benelli M1 Super 90 for over 10 years now. It's freaking fast, you can bump fire it. If the Winchester is faster, it can't be no more than by milliseconds. I'll stick to my Benelli regardless. |

You need to qualify the question:
A) What is the fastest shotgun - Mechanically B) What is the fastest shotgun in practical use - ability to hit a target, absorb recoil, acquire next target, hit next target The answer to A is who cares that happens in a lab. The answer to B is largely dependent on you. The most important is what is reliable. I have pumps, tweeked 1100, M1 S90 Scientific type testing aside - of my inventory the M1 S90 is fastest - by a hair mechanically. In actual use I am a hair faster with the heavy weight gas gun. When I say hair - I am talking 0/100's difference in splits. Ergonomics and personal pref will make a much bigger diff in use |

Winchester X2! Five shots in .51 seconds. Just bought one and am waiting for it to show up. I have read on Brian Enos forums that some of the guys shooting the Benellis have actually shot them too fast for them to fire as the bolt goes forward. Not sure exactly sure how it happens.

Stock benellis are not mechanically capable of anything faster than .13 second resets.
Lightening the bolt as shown is a good mod that can speed up reset time, reduce felt recoil and enable your Benelli to cycle lighter loads more reliably...

You can have it done to you own bolt, but I don't know anyone that sells them as is. Benelli bolts are very expensive as spare parts, this would be cost prohibitive as a stand alone part. It's just the milling away of 2-3 ounces from the ejection side of the bolt. If you can do that, you can do this. |

Matt, if you have a newer M1 S90 I can show you how to modify it to hold an extra round on the feed gate. I just did mine about a week ago.

Good article on "speed shotgun"
I've known that my whole shooting life. That's why I own three 1100s and zero Benellis The 1100 is the better gun if you know how to work around it's few quirks. It's faster ; it points more naturally and it's shot to shot recovery is better than any other semiauto shotgun ever made. Period. |

Tom Knapp may have shot eight hand thrown clay pigeons with a Benelli, but Matt Dryke did
seven, using an 870 in which he had to pump, release trigger completely to reset and pull again for each shot. Knapp could have gotten 9 to 10 with an 1100, not because of cycling, but the Remington stays on target better than any of the alloy framed Italian field autos The fastest gun of all is the pump action Winchester Model 12. It is limited by the shooter's ability. All the other semi autos have about the same cyclic rate as a Grease Gun |

I am a fan of the 1014 (benelli i guess)
I worked as a "breecher" and got to put quite a few through mine. This is 7 rounds and a reload - fast if I may say so myself. 7 +1
