[ARCHIVED THREAD] - What type of M16 is this?

Snagged the image from the AF basic training site. Looks like an A1 to me? (triangular hand guards) but I'm no expert.

Does the AF get the army/marines old weapons?

Snikt, The AF was the first service to adopt the M-16. They didn't adopt the M16A1 and as of 10 years ago when I got out they hadn't adopted the A2 either. Triangular handguards were used on both the M-16 and A1. The most obvious difference is the A1 has a forward assist and the M16 doesn't.

I'm in the AF, do you really think we have funding to upgrade to all the latest toys? :) I was stationed in the ROK Oct. 00 thru Oct 01, and i was issued an old school M16, triangle handguard, no forward assist, A1 sights. We don't throw it out if it still works.

Well on the bright side, the M16 and M16A1 are both fully auto rather than the 3rd burst of the A2 :)

I just requalified the other day and the CATM guys said everyone who deploys (from Eglin at least) will get a A2.

note to self: next time I tac-out, remember to not only camo the face, but the NECK AND HANDS TOO! I think that's embarrasing to show such a simple blunder on a promotional pic!

The trooper on the right looks to have an A2.

The dork on the left pointing at the trip wire looks to have an A1.

Geez I must be blind. I didn't even notice that trip wire before, attention went right to the guns. Well I guess i'll be the guy in basic who trips over that

Damn, they also don't appear to have the elastic bands on their helmet covers... WTF is up with that? That would have meant about a billion pushups in the Army when I was in!

Still, every SF troop I ever seen is issued the A-2, and was trained with the A-2. How old is this photo?

Things must have changed. When I was in(76-80) the Marines got everybody elses hand me downs.

I am SF in the AF we have FN A2s as well as coverted m16 to m16a2s the converted ones are all colts with fn uppers and internals. they did a shitty job converting them too!!!!! ps the trooper on the right has a m16 with new handgaurds..we had a bunch of those in the army too!

I see one A2 in the foreground. Looks like he's about to dig a hole (finger where it shouldn't be). The rest appear to be slick side M-16's (no FA).

Those lucky dogs ! When I went through Basic in '87, we had a total of a couple hours classroom time with an M16 & then a couple hours on the line with .22 rimfire converts.
All in one day & that was the only day I touched a weapon for the duration.
That must be a combat controllers class pic you have there.
I will vouch for the outdated gear, I was issued a rotten old M9 gasmask & wasted steel pot for a TDY to Eglin once.

Looks like basic section tactics..except they are to close together, standing when they should be either kneeling or prone and the cam job!!!! Or lack thereof. This must be a picture of what not to do.

The AF standard issue was the M16 ( Model 01's, 02's, AR15 and later M16's ) The confusion people are having in this post in exactly ID'n these rifles is that it was common practice to replace broken M16 furniture with A2 Handguards/ buttstocks etc since M16 replacement furniture was out of production. It was also common too see A1 buttsocks. Nearly all the AF M16's have been convered too Quasi M16A2's by replacing the upper with a new A2 upper assy and installing the crappy 3 shot burst and A2 furniture. Lowers were than remarked safe/ semi/ burst and an A2 added after M16 or if it was a model AR15 -01/02 it was electro penciled with M16A2 designation.......

Yeah really crappy camo job there. We used to not like to put the camo on our lips, cause it tastes like crap. Our SGT used to say,
"When I'm walking through the woods and all I see is some pretty pink lips I get all excited. I'll take them pretty pink lips and stick my d#ck in them!"
Everyone would then camo there lips immediatly. (dunno about today's army) LOL

They are all M-16A1's from what I can tell.

It's probably on old file photo. Notice that everyone is wearing steel pots and not kevlar.

about 2 years ago the "kassenbaum-Baker senate panel" recomended to the Army Navy and AF that the best way for them to remain relavant in the next century was to emulate the Marine Corps. at that point the AF decided to add a week to their basic training (bringin it to 7) this added week is supposed to consist of basic field training. kind of like BWT on paris island. i guy i know from the Corps is now a cop with an air guard unit and he was at lackland for his 7 level school and witnessed some of this field training. we had a lot of good laughs when he was telling the stories.
