I'm looking for a lower end device. My only use will be predator hunting ~300 yards. I only need detection, not identification. Figured I would ask the experts here. Seek or other phone type device? Leupold LTO? Are those Torrey Pines things any good for this type of application? Any info is appreciated.

Just spot for now. I have a custom light that I can use for a positive ID to about 215 yards (dual 18650 T50 aspheric lens. My buddy is a light nerd). Maybe a bit further. I rarely have more than 300 yards of open space when scanning, and I would say the average is 200. I was hoping something like the LTO would at least detect a coyote or fox at that distance.

Interesting. So, even on 6x it's a very small dot? Is the contrast such that the dot is clearly visible? All I really care about is knowing there's a heat signature between 200-400 yards. That's it. I'm assuming this device won't give me that.

Will any of the lower end devices allow for detection of coyote/fox at ~400 yards?

Ive got an older 160 class core unit. But it has a 25mm lens. That being said something fox or coyote sized might be a few pixel blob at 200yds with it. Given the vastly crappier lens on the LTO i wouldnt count on it to be any better. All digital zoom gives you is some "fake" pixels. I.e. ut turns a 1 pixel blob into a 4 pixel blob for example. It is very usefull if you have a high res core like a 640 core, but its pretty useless with low res cores.

My pulsar HD38 would probably do it for "detection" at those ranges on a good night.
