I would guess it would be a pre-ban configured AR15 registered as a short barreled rifle with either a 7” upper or 11” upper, or would it be better with no but stock and just a forward pistol grip instead? You would defiantly need an accessories rail so you could mount a laser site and a high power flashlight.

No stock? If by CQC you mean actually touching then I suppose so...

Why just register an SBR? If you're willing to go that route then get a Class III. CQC is one of the few places that full auto is an appropriate option. Cost is a bitch, though.

As for a rail system I'd probably go for an ARMS SIR with an ARMS 40 BUIS. Tac light would be the Surefire 900A/B series (newer version). Optic would be the EOTech 552 Holosight. Four position telestock is a must as well.

Stay away from laser sights. In CQC where you're stacked for entry and you sweep a room it becomes very tough to differentiate your laser from everyone elses.

True, but an 11.5" commando will still penetrate most body armor, but an MP5 won't.

.

SBRs are Class III.

Best CQB AR type wepon in my opinion is the Colt R0977, AKA M4 Carbine.

Well an SBR would only cost $200 to make, verses a auto which could maybe $5000 or so to make, not to mention both require special permits here.

an M4 has an overall length of 29.8”; a Commando has an overall length of 26.8”. I guess I’ll just have to stick with my 33” carbine, I think I’ll look into getting some accessory rails for it

If it didn’t have a stock then you could probably register it as an AOW and have a forward pistol grip.

Wait a minute Sulaco, I thought you're from California? Didn't they ban possession of ARs?

Anyway, screw the short barrel config. Get a 16" M4A4 with a QD flash suppressor designed to accept one of AAC's or B&T's finer suppression products. THAT'S THE ULTIMATE CQC CONFIG....well, if you're willing to pay for it, go with Troy's 14.5" barrel. That will give you good ballistics out to 100 yards.
