What kind of rifle/scope combo would be needed to hit a egg at 1000 meters? something realistic under $10.000

Cannot be reliably done for under the price of a main battle tank.

And cant be reliably done at all with a shoulder fire rifle.

What about a 50 cal?? 1800m range but can it be accurate at 1000m??

According to Einstein's Theory of Relativity... you could use a 22lr if you could speed the rotation of the earth up so the bullet stays completely still and the 1000m target runs into the bullet.

In how many shots?

Most 1000 yard BR matches are won by aggregates in the 4" neighborhood.

.4 MOA at 1000 yards should be able to hit an egg but it might take a few shots.

What kind of egg?

The reason I asked is because I was told the once a year in Nc the have a rifle shoot and part of it was that they put an egg on a pole at a 1000m, and if you hit it you get a $1000.of course this my be BS, but I was wondering what type of rifle/scope would be needed to hit it.

The rifle/scope mounts and ammo are all very important but for the best 10-15 shooters in the world it is luck that decides who would win such an event.

Technology and training can only get you close.

Lynn McMurdo set a new 1000 yard World Record in .50 BMG Light Rifle about two months ago.  His five-shot group was 2.97 inches.  He fired all five shots in 48 seconds.

then again, you have to be able to see the egg at 1000 yds.  1000yd targets are considerably bigger than an egg.

Nobody has answered the intire question. What scope? Are they using the straight 6 power or are they stepping out and going with the 3x9 versions? LOL

We do a 600 yard "Egg Shoot" here in Memphis (MSSA). It's a "one clean/cold bore shot" event. $5.00 a shot, winner takes 85% of the pot. So far, only on guy has taken the loot.
I've hit it a couple of times in practice, as have several others,  but NOT when the the money was on the line.
I'm somewhat surprised, and disappointed, at the lack of interest in this event. Lots of shooters in our club who expound on their (own) expertise & super accurate sticks, but it's hard to get them off the 100 yard covered line.
It's a difficult task at 600 yards; I would hazard a guess that the degree of difficuly would increase exponentially at a 1000 meters.

Yeah, it's amazing to hear how many people say, "Well just buy a .308 and you'll be good-to-go out to a thousand Yards!" and they've never shot past one or two hundred themselves.

Spending $10,000 seems a hard way to make $1000.

I don't know what scope I'd use.  It'd have to be a big one to see a chicken egg that far out.

If I haven't screw up the math, & assumming the egg diameter to be 1.5 inches "end on", that translates to a little more than one eighth MOA (.143 MOA, to be exact).
At 600, it is very difficult to see through a 10X Unertl. At any power above that the mirage will pretty well do you in.

Let me jump back in and do a little anecdotal download.  My competition .50 BMG rifle has a Leupold 8.5-25x50 Long Range Tactical that's been modified by Premier Reticles to ensure repeatable accuracy.  Premier did NOT power-boost this scope.  Lots of other folks use NightForce 8.5-22x56 and 12-42x56.  My .308 LTR has a Leupold MkIV M1-16 that's been worked over.  And the AR15 varmint rifle has a Leupold 4.5-14x50 LRT also worked on by Premier.  All these rifles are 1000 yard capable.

The thing about optical power and long range is you need to have a scope that will get you the visual resolution you need yet not be too susceptible to mirage when it's running.  Early in the morning I'll crank in all the power I can get then start backing out as the mirage kicks in or the barrel heats up.

At 1000 yards with good glass you can see a chicken egg but you'll need good light and suitable background.  At competition matches our target indicators are 4 inch diameter circles.  Usually orange unless your shot hits the indicator from the preceeding shot at which time the next indicator is green.  Target indicators aren't that much larger than chicken eggs.  At matches the announcer will call "Green on 42" (or whatever number) announcing the shooter at that station has hit his indicator.  The first few times this happens everybody cheers and applauds.  These days the level of competition has reached the point the announcements come so often the effect dies off pretty fast.

And Arock has a very good point about scope clarity.
One of my plinking guns has a 10-40 power scope that i happened to acquire very cheaply. Anything above 20 power gives me a headache trying to make out the details.
At about 200 yards i can barely make out bulletholes.
That same day, a shooter a few tables over had a springfield arm. scope..
i think it was a gen 3 6-24 power? DOnt remember clearly.
Looking through his was a world of difference.
Its a lot easier to discern the details, and eye relief was a lot better.
I'd like to try out a nightforce some day at 42 power, just to wow myself.

thats funny, i was hitting Xs and 10s at 1000yds with a buds PSS on the rifle team. Do you all think its impossable or something?
