Roughly, the Garands receiver is longer than the M14/M1A and has accomodations for its internal magazine.  The M14 receiver  accepts a mechanism that allows for fully automatic fire.  The M1A lacks this feature.

Garand and M14 are forged receivers and M1A is cast along with most of its parts.

What about the billet recievers out there?  Like Enterprise and Fulton Armory.

Also, what is the rear lug thing all about?

I've never heard anything good about the Entreprise receivers,  heard lots of stories about being off dimensionally.  The Fulton Armory receivers are made by Armscor with a little better QC.  And also the Fulton and Armscor receivers are investment cast like the Springfield Incs.

The rear lug gives you more area if your gonna glass bed your action.

There are Enterprise recievers and there are Smith Enterprise, Inc. recievers they are different companys and the SEI recievers are supose to be very good. Some SEI recievers are cast, some are forged, and some are billet.
