I know that there are both large and small holes on the front pins that attach upper to the lower. What is the size diff? How can you tell which one you have? Are both front and back pins coming in large and small? Are there inserts to adapt one to the other? Etc.....

All rear pins are the standard mil-spec size.
I think it's .250" but I'm too lazy to go look.

Colt uses a larger (.312?) front pin.
All the other manufacturers use the mil-spec size on the front too.
(I think some newer Colts may have the standard .250 now, but I'm not sure.)
My Colt was made in the 1970's and it has the large hole.
Bushmaster, Brownells, and DPMS sell adapter pins to mate up a large hole lower to a small hole ( mil-spec) upper....Or a large hole ( Colt ) upper to a small hole ( mil-spec) lower.
