What all do u do? and how often? after every time out shooting? or after 100? 200? 500 shells?
i just cleaned my dad's semi-auto. Smith & Wesson Model 1000... old gun... and it was nasty.. he hasn't cleaned it in probly 15 years.... the endcap was rusted on, and it was so full of gunk it would jam or misfire once every 20-30 rounds.... took about 1 1/2 hours to clean it...
I cleaned his O/U too, and it still had some metal shavings in it from breakin it in, he had never cleaned it... EVER! it was bad too.....
So what steps do u take?

i take the barrel off, take the bolt out, wipe it down, wipe down the slide rails, i dont bother taking the trigger housing out, i just spay some CLP in there, let it sit, and dig in there with a cloth to get the excess out...

if the barrel has some foul in it, i may OR may not stick a new tampon down there to get it out, yeah, i said tampon.

I'll clean my 1100 when it starts to misbehave -- usually around 500 or shells through it. Otherwise, since I use it all the time for 3-gun matches, I just lube it once in a while and keep on going. I haven't cleaned the bore at all in almost 3 years. I'm afraid to look down it now...

When I do clean it, I just clean the parts of the gas system -- bolt carrier & piston, the outside of the mag tube, bolt, and gas rings. Oh, yeah, and I clean the lense on the red dot. It does get smogged up something fierce.

A spray of CLP and a couple of wipe runs and my barrel looks like new.

Aside from the barrel, I've cleaned my 870 once. Upon taking it down and looking at it, I realized there really was no need. This was after about 200 rounds in a used shotgun that didn't appear to be cleaned before going on the shelf, aside from the barrel. CLP aerosol is a blessing.

ETA: I apply a healthy coat of CLP (close to, but not dripping) to the bolt and trigger group. I then lightly scrub with an old tooth brush. I run a 20 gauge bore mop very lightly sprayed in CLP through my mag tube and extension.

Thank's y'all... i was just wondering if there was anything i'm missing, i usually take the barrel off, run some patches around a brush soaked with powder solvent. they come out black.... then i spray some hoppe's elite gun cleaner and let it soak for 5 minutes and work on the rest... i soak a patch in Hoppe's #9 Nitro solvent and use my finger to wipe it around inside til it's not too dirty, then put some elite gun cleaner in there... then i use the bore brush to scrub out the barrel a couple of times, and run a patch or 2 through til they come out clean... then a oiled patch to give it a light coat of oil, then i wipe out the chamber and lightly oil that and the slide rails..... then i put it back together.... only took trigger assembly out once.... didn't know what to do to it... so....
Anything i missed?

I have never really clean my 870. I oil it every time I shoot it and then wipe it down. I sometimes run a cloth through the barrel.

Me too!!!!hug.gif I wipe it down IF it gets wet. I may run a cloth through the barrel if it looks dirty!!!
I think I have oiled it at one time or another.
I promous to clean it as soon as it stops working..... or maybe sooner.

I pull mine aprt, all the way. Its easy with a Sidesaddle, as its just two Allen Bolts to drop the trigger assembly.

I take all my shotguns apart and totoaly clean and oil them after each outing. I too use the Old_Painless tampon method.

I guess it depends on if you like cleaning guns. I enjoyed the quiet time of being by myself and in my zone. It also helps you to be more familiar with your guns.

All I do is strip it (about 30 seconds for a Maverick 88

), wipe everything down with Outers Gun Wipes, and put it back together. 5 minutes if I'm watching TV and distracted. If the wad fouling is really bad I'll chuck up a paintball gun squeegy thing (fiberglass tube wrapped with fuzzy stuff) up in a drill, soak it in Break Free, and go at it. Usually I don't even bother with that.

1) check to make sure it is NOT loaded
2) check again
3) point in a safe direction
4)inspect all functional/moving parts and safety devices if applicable to ensure proper function
5) apply bore cleaning solution to a swab and run it through the barrel from the back to the front several times and repeat untill no signs of residue are present.
6) lubercate all moving parts
7) if disassembly occured reassemble
8) check AGAIN to make sure it is not loaded point in a safe direction and remove the firearm out of battery.
9) clean working area and store all harmful chemicals out of the reach of children and pets.

870... Nothing.

1100 is a diffrent story. When I shoot at a fun competition for a week in the summer I clean my gun before it starts and the night after every event just to be sure. for a "Full cleaning" Its alot of attention on barrel, choke, clean the bolt and make sure the tube is VERY clean,

And for a "Nightly" cleaning I just wipe it all down with some oil and clean the tube again Dont put the rings in wrong Mine were in wrong and wouldnt spit 1 oz. loads wouldnt even kick lights if I remember but It sure did kick that 3 in. mag shell with no problem

BoreSnake and about twenty minutes with a GP brush and some Q-tips. Lubricate as needed, reload, and back to the hidey spot.

Whenever I have shot it, no matter how few the rounds. Although the cleaning doesn't happen right after I get back home, it may even be a day or two before I get to it. After my sweaty hands have been on it it's a good idea to at least wipe it down soon after I'm done handling it.

Before I clean guns I make sure I have lot's of Hoppes #9 and Mick Ultra on hand. While the guns are soaking I'm drinking.

I hate cleaning guns but because I shoot every week I clean most Sunday nights.

Like most stated the 870 don't need much. Just wipe down the barrel and outside if you only fired a couple of boxes. Every year or after a tower shoot I strip down the pumps all the way.

The 1100 are cleaned, rings, barrel, mag tube gas ports every 4-5 hundred rounds. Stripped down every 2K rounds, drop trigger, pull out bolt, recoil spring ect.

What a pain in the ass. If I win the lottery I'm going to have a gunsmith come to the house each week and clean the guns while I watch!

On teh box o truth site, it says to use WD 40, i thought i had heard somewhere not do use that b/c it dries up all oils and greases... true? or am i remembering wrong?
