I have handguns, shotguns, AK's, AR's, SKS's and Mini's for work starting in the 0-200 yd range. When going past that I would probably grab my M1 Garand, which is my only battle rifle. For more precise shots I have dressed up a Winchester Model 70 .270 rifle for this role. I have added a Bell and Carlson kevlar and fiberglass stock which allows the barrel to free float......done some minor trigger work...installed a Harris bipod.....and topped it off with a Simmons 44 Mag 3.5-10 X 44mm scope since I don't have the time to learn or money for $1,000 dollar mil-dot scopes. It shoots very tight groups, the action is slick and I feed it Federal Premium 130 gr. BTSP loads. I know most people like the .308 but I find the .270 a very flat shooting round and prefer it for shooting out to the max range I need......400 yds. I have the rifle zeroed 3 inches high at 100 yds so I can take advantage of dead on aiming out to about my max range of 400 yds. What do you folks think about this set-up and what rifles and loads do you like? Thanks.

The .270 gets my nod also. Mine's a Ruger M77 with a Weaver 2.5X7 wide-view. Honestly haven't shot at anything over maybe 325 yards. Currently suits my needs, but I'm about to aquire a 30-06 and plan to see what it can do in the 400 yard department.

The only reason the .308 causes such a stiffy is cause the military uses it, the military uses it cause they don't know better(also the can't us expanding point ammo) the .308 with boat tail match 168grain ammo provides wonderful accuracy while leaving less in the terminal ballistics dept. I think the .270 is a wonderful choice sine we don't have to follow any convention rules amount ammo.

The 308 can be a very effective round out to 1000 yards. My load using a 175gr Sierra MK BTHP stays subsonic out past 1200 yards. I have a 700VS in 308, and a Sendero in 300 win mag on the way.

|
AR-10(T) in .308 and I have ArmaLite's new AR-30 bolt-gun in .300 WinMag on order.
|
|
It stays subsonic out to 1200? That's an interesting load. |

Mine is a Remington model 700 synthetic in .270 Lots of people like the round, and you can count me as one. Just has a cheap-0 Bushnell 3-9x on it right now (terrible field of view) but that'll change soon.

Many of you folks shoot far better and more often than I do but I'm always curious about various distance claims.
My personal 'opinion' (that's opinion and not facts) indicate the following: .223 - about 400 yards .308 - about 700 yards .300 WinMag - about 1000 yards .338 Lapua - about 1200 yards .408 - Beats the heck out of me but probably good to at least 2500 yards .50 cal - I don't have a clue Other opinions ? Facts would probably be alright too ! |

Um well here's my gun...
Forum Link: Really, it's just a coincidence. |

I've got a Winchester M70 Laredo .300 WinMag and a Savage 10FP .308 and a couple DSA FAL's |
|
For medium to long distance work, I love my Stoner SR-25 RAS Match. It's just a beautiful weapon. It has a 24" Obermeyer Military Match bbl, and shoots .25" groups at 100 yards. It's a 7.62 NATO. I usually stick with match-grade 168gr sierra match king bthp (suggested by manufacturer).

I use a Rem 700 with a 24" barrel in .308 with 175 SMKs in tactical matches where we shoot from 200 yards out to 1000 yards. I am still working on load developement so haven't yet been real accurate at 900 and 1000. BUT...
One of the guys who consistently finishes in the top 5 also uses a .308 - in a 22" barrel!, and his rounds are still supersonic at 1000. |
|
|
I use a Remington 700 VLS in .308 for the long range stuff. It shoots further than I do but I working on it. I know there are better rounds but .308 is cheap shooting and I get sub-moa with Portuguese or Radway Green.

|
Sure would suck to have the bench right next to that cinderblock wall. The rounds would bounce right back at you.
![]() M16 for short range M14 for more distance M1 Garand for a little more AR50 for extreme distance 1000+ yards. |

I must be psychic or is that psychotic, I dont remember what the doc said.
Anyway I had independently come to the conclusion that I am VERY interested in a Winchester Coyote in the new .270 WSM and here we are with several votes for the standard .270. I dont want to lug around some heavy ass "sniper" rifle that looks cool, and I DO like the M1A but I want a medium weight bolt gun with a barrel somewhere between a standard and bull, chambered in something better (IMO) than .308 but not bone jarring in a 9ish pound rifle like I hear a .300 Win Mag is. Not to mention its versatile enough to use on coyotes and such. At least thats what I was thinking. I probably wont do more than punch holes in paper but it seems to have more potential and still is probably 1" MOA or close. I just wish it did come in a black stock. Hell I cant even find out if they are available yet. |

Remington 700 in 7mm Rem Mag and I have a FN Police Tactical in .308 that is awaiting a scope and other fun stuff (bipod, sling spare mags damn things are $ 35-50!)

Husqvarna Sporter (Mauser 98 w/ 24" lightweight barrel). Shoots 1/4 inch 3 shots at 100 yards, but that thin tube starts moving after that. Special load my grandfather developed for 800 yard high power-scoots a 165 BT out at 2950 fps...kicks like a 300 win mag for some reason...

Man... lets get a little velocity going here. What happened to the theory that speed kills...
Rem 700 floated and bedded, Jewell triger, lugs lapped, Vais magnum brake in a 300 rem ultra mag. I know this isn't "boltgun.com", but for seriously long work, wouldn't you rather have a good solid bolt gun? Don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to start arguements. My Bushy is one of my favorite weapons, the one I probably carry most. But,if the distance is long, and what I'm shootin' at needs to be hit hard the first time....gimme a bolt. |
|
Here is my list:
AR15 20" Heavy Barrel in a Colt Delta configuration. My Bushmaster Variminter Rifle. I just got it and I need to test it. HK91 M1903A3 |
|
FN Ultima Ratio Intervention in 300WSM, or Accuracy International AWM in 338 Lapua. Scoped with Nightforce NSX.
To go even further, Accuracy International AW50, or FN Hecate II in 50Cal. Again a nice Nightforce NSX to round out the package. |

Check out
http://www.snipercentral.com/index.phtml Some interesting info here. Scroll down to Equipment and click sniper rifles. It might not be exactly what you are looking for, but it will make you want to spend some hard earned coin. If I remember correctly, the Tango 51 shoots 1/16 MOA at 100 yards. ARH |

I agree 100%. We don't have to use FMJ only so we can use smaller calibers which stay supersonic longer. |

![]() I use a Ruger M77 MkII VLE, Ruger's little known Law Enforcement tactical rifle in .308 Mounted on top is a Tasco Super Sniper 10x42 w/Ruger 30mm rings. BUT after the Black Rifle Convention, I'll have one of these: ![]() an Armalite AR-10A4 Carbine in .308 and I'll more than likely move my Tasco Super Sniper on top of that using an Armalite scope mount My Ruger will be up for sale w/o Optics...anyone interested? |

Remington Sendero, originally in 300 Win Mag, rebarreled to 30-338, action trued, action actually bedded square to aluminum posts in stock and topped with a Nightforce 12x42 that has been lapped into Badger rings. Works extremely well with 190 grain Seirra bullets. For real fun I have 585 Nayti on a CZ action. Yeah I know that a 50 BMG is better but try firing a 750 grain bullet at 2400 fps from a 13 pound, shoulder held rifle.

Tatja, You realize that thing weighs more than you do, right? They aren't all that fun to lug around. But, I know, you're stubborn... ![]() -Troy |
