Sorry no pics my phone has no camera.

I was at a second hand store looking for tools when i cam across what looks like a SAPI plate.    I have not seen any of this stuff in years.

It is maybe a medium size front panel with no markings on it and it has a glossy black finish with a texture.  Thing is heavy.

What the hell is it?   They wanted $75 for it and I kind thought it would be cool to put a few rounds into ALA "box of truth: style.

Have any of you guys seen one that meets this rough description before.

Thanks

Heavy, glossy black with texture...sounds like maybe a steel plate with anti-spall coating.  Lots of companies make them.

About how thick was it?  If it was around 1/4", it's almost certainly steel.  If it was more like a full inch, may have been a Gamma plate from Tactical Armor Products - they have a very similar coating.  They're pretty lightweight for their size, though.

Want to say it was under an inch,   how is the price?   Would a magnet stick to it with the coating?

Sounds like a line-x coating on the plate.  My LTC SAPIs have that coating on them.  If it is steel, it will likely stop all pistol rounds and some rifle rounds.  Not 5.56.  If it is ceramic, I wouldn't buy it from the bin of death, as it could have been dropped.

So does the $75 sound fair for it?

If it's ceramic and came out of a bargain bin, then know that what you are buying is not a life-saving device but a target.  If you are comfortable spending $75 on a plate that's only worthy of destructive testing, then go for it.  If it's steel, then definitely go for it at that price (as long as it's 10x12).  The cheapest I know of is around $100 online for 10x12 steel plates of any quality.

For something unknown, no $75 is not worth it.  If you want something like that, save your money and buy a known quantity that fits your needs.

Its a second hand store, offer them $20.

Not $75 does not seem like a good deal.
