If i keep it in the trunk with the ammunition in a seperate box, can i transport  the shotgun & ammunition to my friends home in PA to go shooting on his land?

Interstate travel laws of the federal level override State and Local laws.

SOOO... I can drive through MA with whatever I want in the trunk... but keep them locked in a container with ammo and mags in a separate unit (locked).

And don't make unneeded stops

Just be wary of going through DC.  They seize 1st, let you prove the law afterwards.
