Has anybody here ever heard of the PTR-91?  It seems to be a US clone of the HK 91. It looks like an alright rifle, but it is new and I am wondering if anybody has one. If you do, does it have any reliability or disassembly problems?
Here is the advertising site.
JLD Enterprises: PTR-91

Thanks,
Patrick

I PUT ONE IN LAY AWAY AT A LOCAL DEALER.  HE LET ME TAKE IT APART BEFORE I PUT ANY MONEY DOWN.  THE BOLT AND BOLT CARRIER ARE MARKED HK.  THE STOCK IS A LITTLE CHEAP, BUT OTHER THAN THAT, IT LOOKS LIKE A DECENT RIFLE FOR THE MONEY.  I WILL PROBABLY PICK IT UP IN 3 OR 4 WEEKS.  I WILL POST HOW IT SHOOTS.

I'd really like to buy one of those.

how much was it?

The shop/range I frequent in Belleville, IL (Belleville Shooting Range) just ordered two of them. The folks that ordered them want to make MSG-90/PSG-1 clones. I hope it works out for them. The shop manager told me that the reviews he has seen are VERY positive, and H&K folks attending the SHOT Show were amazed by the quality of this gun.

was it able to do 1 moa?

Damn you are getting me excited

How much is this? If it can hold 1.5-2 MOA and is reliable I'm definetely buying this rifle, provided it is under $1250. This is a battle rifle, not a match rifle anyways.

But its not chrome lined like Hk91's barrel, is it? (or is Hk91's barrel not chrome lined?)

it's a match rifle. PTR-91(ptr = precision target rifle) so it should do at least 1 moa. I'm hoping it holds a 1 moa guarantee. remember the sr9s were old about 1k themselves when they were available for importation..

So what's the median price on one of these?

Damn.

It shouldn't be reliable in the field and I cannot play with it roughly then.

There is one for sale, with pics, on www.hk91.com for $775, I think. Looks like a nice rifle.

Keep in mind you can find Greek SAR8s in the $1000 range, which is damn near a German gun in quality.

so does anyone know the full accuracy potential of the weapon?
Link Posted: 4/12/2003 2:01:08 PM EDT
[#12]
Don't know about accuracy or anything but I saw 3 of these today at a gun show.  Price was $769 to $995.  Finish looked perfect.

TheMao - your from Belleville, Il. Small world, thats my home town, class of 71.  How are things there nowdays?  I think I might have been to the Belleville range once.  Is that the indoor one?

SteyrAUG is running a limited group buy on these.

The price is $885 + $25 shipping.  There are only a few left.

Is this reliable? Like, is the barrel chrome lined or something (or do they chrome lined real deal G3s at all?)

Man if I'm going to get a battle rifle, this one will be the first when I get the DAMN money.

My local shop has one.  I checked it out today.  The fit and finish on the gun looks perfect.  Nicest welds I have seen on ANY H&K style receiver I have seen.  The price was $895.

I PICKED UP MY PTR 91 RIFLE LAST FRIDAY.  I WENT TO THE RANGE THIS MORNING.  IT BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES OF LONG AGO WHEN I OWNED AN HK91.  I FIRED APPROX. 300 ROUNDS OF VARIOUS SURPLUS AMMUNITION WITH ONLY ONE MALFUNCTION.  THAT WAS WHEN THE RIFLE WAS EXTREMELY DIRTY.  THE EMPTY FAILED TO COMPLETELY EJECT.  THE REST OF THE MAGAZINE FIRED WITHOUT INCIDENT.
ACCURACY AT 50 YARDS WAS AMAZING.  I COULD KEEP ALL TWENTY ROUNDS IN A MAGAZINE WITHIN A 2 INCH CIRCLE.  THIS WAS USING MY RANGE BAG AS A REST.

Thats pretty combat-accurate
Is the barrel chrome lined?

I'm sorry but I don't count shooting a battlerifle at 50yds my SKS can shoot that well at 50yds....any battlre rifle can shoot that small of groups at that close range.... try 200yds or longer.. THAT will tell if the rifle is accurate or not

Local shop has them for $799.99, are they worth it?  Same shop sells CETME's for $349.99.  Are the PTR-91's worth more than 2 Century built CETME's?

So this will be a wise purchase if a HK91 type rifle is wanted?

I have a CETME, it's an OK rifle, but dislike the rear sight.  I didn't have the many problems that other owners complained about.

Mine had great fit and finish but would not extract PMC ball ammo.

I have already sent it back I will let you know what customer service does with this.
I suspect the fluting was not cut to the correct depth because it took a beating on that cocking handle to force the case from the chamber my hand is still sore.
BTW the cocking handle is tough.:)

Group buy price at $885 +$25 sounds like a group gouging to me.  My dealer got mine through CDNN plus their markup and I walked out the door with it at $825.

SteyrAug,

Have you done any type of "torture tests" to PTR-91 you have? Or just shoot some 500 rounds through that thing?

I consider 2" at 100 yard is good enough, but I'd like to see some reliability.

Thanks

Is the barrel on the MSG-90 chrome lined? I know the PTR-91 is not chrome lined however.

SteyrAug sir, post that reliability report as soon as you get the chance!

What is the skinny on Mags?  Alluminums are 3 bucks new, and steel are 5 bucks rusty?  I have some of both and the steel are way more robust.

Are alluminums worth owning?
