I know the Mossberg 590 is used by the millitary, but I have some questions....

What branch of the Millitary uses the 590?, how many are there?

What slings do they use?, are they just regular M-16 Slings?, Where can I get a correct millitary sling for a 590?....

Will the bayonet lug accept standard M-7, and M-9 bayonets?, what bayonet is normaly issued with the 590?....

Are there any other accachments that will fit on the bayonet lug?....

Whats the ratio between 590's, and other millitary shotguns currently in use, which is more common?....

What shells does the millitary use?....

As you may have already guessed I felt my collection was in need of a millitary shotgun so I went out, and bought one, now I'm flush with questions....

Sorry, I be having no answers... but I thought it was the 590A1 that they used and not the 590?

It is the A1 model, with the heavy barrel.

I didn't have a Mossberg 590 in Iraq, we carried old Winchester 1200 Defenders (wooden stock, 5 round capacity, heat shield)

But the one part of the question I can answer is we carried Federal 00 buck shells.

I do own a Mossberg 590, and it will fit any bayonet designed for the M16.

Not sure it has a heatshield, bayonet lug, a 9 shot capacity, and it's parkerized, I'm not sure if it's a heavy barrel, or not I'm used to rifles, how do I tell?....

2 3/4", or 3"? Were they plated or unplated?....

We have both Mossberg 500 and Winchester 1200 in our arms rooms.

they were 2 3/4", probably unplated.  They weren't anything special, just red shells that came in a white box.  Same stuff you would find in a typical gun store.

I thought some units ran the 590 prior to the A1 model coming out...  Dad had his 590 back in...  '96 (?).

Current procurements are the 590A1.  Earlier models were the 590.  IIRC the Marines wanted a heavier barrel, metal safety and FCG parts.  That became the A1.  Of course right after they requested those changes they went with the Benellis.
The Army and Navy have items in the FY07 budget for several thousand 590A1s.
The A1 does not come from the factory with the heatshield, and Mossberg says that they will not fit on the 590A1.
My 590A1 says different.
ETA:  Forgot about the slings.  These are usually just M16 slings.  Bayonets are whatever the unit uses.  The M7, M9, and M10 will fit.  Some better than others even within the same model/type.  You will find a wide variety of shotties in use.  Some units bought COTS shotguns of various types for breaching.  Contract runs have recently been the M4, 870, 590, etc.  Some older weapons will be seen less frequently, like the 1200 mentioned.  I've heard of some M37s being around, and that Mossberg Jungle Gun.

The cool things about the old Winchester 1200s we carried was they came with the old school, riot type bayonet.  Those suckers must have been two feet long.  They looked like something that would have been used on Revolutionary War muskets....

They're was a "shotguns in the military" picture thread  here a while back, and they showed the Army training with 590s(head shield, bead sight, parked- exactly like the one I own), so the 590A1 is not the only one used.

We had 590's in the Marine's

I was in Security force company Atlantic and on Mardet sea duty. My det had m14's, M16's, m203's, M9's, M590's, 870's. Plus all the other heavier stuff. I was issued a M590, M14, M9, and M203fun times. but on security alerts you grabbed whatever the armorer gave you (always a M9 and then some long gun (m16a2, m590, or rem 870) I liked the M590 the best for ship use and QCB. We just had the standard M16 slings and cheesy shot shell pouches. I loved the tritium sites. I have to see if I can dig up some photos. this was from the late 90's though. I do remember the 870's we had were funky looking though. wood stocks, extended magazine tube, and funky mag tube barrel clamp thing. I took that Marine combat shotgun Course and that was way fun (minus the bruises on both shoulders)
UPDATE
Ok digitized the photos

the weak side one hand drills

and the 870 we used too

Great pics, dayphotog. Thanks for sharing.

This thread and some googling last night have helped me to decide on which shotgun to buy. (590A1, mossberg cat. no. 51668)

one other thing in the training schools the M590 had no sights (just a bead) but once I got to my unit the 590's had ghost ring sights with tritium
