It looks like the Tavor 5.56 rifle will be for sale in 2002 in the U.S. The rifle is definitely going to use AR15 mags.

It is supposed to be introduced by Barrett Firearms at the S.H.O.T. show in a few weeks. So if your gonna be there lets go see what it looks like. Who wants one?

If you can, bring along a digicam & post a pic here for the rest of us scum to drool over. If it isn't wussified, I'll take one.

This is great news! May hold off on the AR180b to see if this pans out. Isrealis make some cool stuff.
Link Posted: 1/16/2002 2:15:22 PM EST
I'll take one if its under $1000 bucks.

Link Posted: 1/16/2002 2:31:25 PM EST
I bet this rifle will be around $1300 retail.
Link Posted: 1/16/2002 2:33:17 PM EST
If berret is going to bring it in chances are it wont be cheap.

and i agree ill take one also if it isnt basterdized to the max
Link Posted: 1/16/2002 4:13:37 PM EST
I've seen the civilian version. It actually looks better than the military rifle. It does'nt have that "AUG like hangaurd" in front of the grip. Just a pistol grip and a trigger gaurd. Of course there is no flash hider. It still has the optics rail on top with flip-up sights. The best thing about this rilfe is that it is way shorter than an AR15 carbine, even with the same barrel length.
Link Posted: 1/16/2002 4:28:58 PM EST
Are there pics on the Barrett site?
Link Posted: 1/16/2002 6:28:06 PM EST
I'll be at SHOT.. I will try and get a picture and post it. If it's cool, I'll also buy one there <G>
Link Posted: 1/16/2002 7:04:01 PM EST
Here's a post from AssaultWeb...

I think the poster works for Barrett.

This thing looks mighty cool, but I don't see a charging handle. How do you cock the thing? :)

Finaly another a bullpup on the market ! I can't wait to get my hands on a STAR, or any Tavor for that matter.

AHHHH, even the civilian version is sweet! It takes AR mags does it not? Who makes it and when will it be avalible?
Link Posted: 1/17/2002 9:20:06 AM EST
I don't like the changes done to "civilize" the Tavor.

I understand why it can't sport a flash hider, but why did they tamper with the forend, pistol grip. and butt end of the weapon???

Oh, and those flip up sights...give me a break! The damn thing has the sight radius of a handgun!

Should have kept it the same IMHO.
Link Posted: 1/17/2002 9:30:41 AM EST
Looks pretty cool.

Just for those who haven't seen the details on the military version www.isayeret.com/weapons/assault/tavor/tar.htm

The sights on the civillian version look pretty high above the bore. How does that work with trajectory and zero?
Link Posted: 1/17/2002 9:34:20 AM EST
i'm a bit disappointed. i never liked blockish looking guns, and that certainly is one unattractive rifle (the military one is a bit more curvy...not just a feature you find in women).

i think they need to do a run in green or perhapse a sand colored yello/brown, like armalite and cavalry arms.

i might be inclined to buy one if it is under $800 or so.

i agree on the poor sight radium, this is one gun that just begs for some really good battery powered optics. sloth
Link Posted: 1/17/2002 9:38:13 AM EST
I like the look of the civy version, It definitely can be improved. I figure KAC can make a RAS style handguard for it, mount an Aimpoint to the top rail with an ARMS throwlever, thread and pin a fake G3 flash hider on it, and it uses M16 mags, woooooo. nice.

I wonder if they will be offering different barrel lengths.

There are absolutely NO similarties (that I can see) between the Mil and Civ gun. I don't see why Tavor would incur that much expense to build 2 different guns.

IT'S A GUN ! styled body?...lines? curves?... I don't think shooters care if the have the most "stylish" piece at the range, nor do professional users.

If you have to be the prettiest guy at the range, maybe you can get a designer leather handbag to carry your ammo in.

Just a little photoshop mod on the new tavor.

Fake G3 hider, Aimpoint, M16 mag, we just got to make KAC produce a RAS for this gun.

Sometimes it sucks being left handed.

The military model allows for the rile to be taken down, bolt and ejection changed, and put back together for a lefty in a few minutes, per the link I posted a ways back. Not quick enough to do in combat when you want to switch shoulders, but if the civy version has this ability you should be able to have a dedicated southpaw bullpup.

Find something else to be bummed out about (try the Democrats, works for me).

Is this thing California legal or is that pistol grip and assault buttplate combination a no no? Why do I even bother to ask...

PS, this thing looks like a Calico with a few extra pounds on her behind.

Everything is convertable to "left hand" there is an ejection port on each side it has a cover on the left side in the photos. You have to buy another bolt though. Even the safety and the charging handle can be swaped to the other side.
Link Posted: 1/17/2002 11:27:33 AM EST
I am not sure if I am doing the math right, but am I correct in saying it weights 8 pounds loaded? Not too much better than an M16A2. Lots shorter though (28").

like my daddy told me "son, you just cant polish a turd"
Link Posted: 1/17/2002 1:25:19 PM EST
Is it just me or does the civie Tavor look alot more like the SAR-21 the the Tavor? Personaly I like the looks of it, would have prefeered an AUGish handguard like the origional, but overall I'm still phyced about it!

actually the civilian version your seeing is the special forces version, except theirs has an intergal silencer. check the IDF link above to see the politically incorrect version of the "civilian" Tavor.

Umm how can they import it if it accepts Hi-caps?
Link Posted: 1/18/2002 6:32:11 PM EST
I LIKE the civy version! But, that doesn't look like any AR mag I've ever seen.

It's gonna be made here. Look at my original post.

That civi version is one ugly pos. If thats what their gonna sell, cross me off the list

It figures, they take a nice clean looking military rifle and fu@k it over till it looks like a high-point pimp stick.

the fudged this up real bad IMO
Link Posted: 1/19/2002 4:58:20 AM EST
Well for us lefties it will be awesome.
Link Posted: 1/19/2002 6:04:27 AM EST
The civ version pictured was the special forces version without the silencer, so there is the possibility that they might come out with the other 'flavors'.

I still really like the civ version pictured

The civilian version is awesome.

It actually looks like it was engineered, and tooled up for production. To me the "issue" Tavor looks like it was hastily sculpted out of bondo over the top of the Bushy M17.

(And is it just me, or does the civie version look kinda like the Hayes Plasma Rifle from Terminator II?).

Sweet. Put me down for one.

From the Israeli Special Forces Weapons Guide:

....However, it seems that the TAR chances of actually be adopted by the IDF are slim, as the IDF is already buying mass sums of the Flattop M4 (M4A1) which is a much cheaper as well as combat proven weapon.
