Anybody have a suppresed 762x39?  More specifically an AR upper.  

Really I'm trying to maximize my tax stamps, I thought about a .300 whisper but if I can do just as good with a suppressed x39 upper with handloads I'd be more inclined to go that directions since "blasting" ammo would be relatively cheap, and the handloads would require less brass prep.  

I'm thinking I'll get a YHM .308 can btw

I just set up an AK with a Gemtech HVT. It's not super quiet, more like a suppressed AR. But it works and I'm happy!


ETA, I had this on an M1A but with the thin bbl and the weight of the can, the thing caused bbl flex and it shot low. Instead of spending a bunch of money to get a heavy bbl for the M1A, I just bought a $75 bi-lock from Gemtech for the AK. Cheap to shoot and fun!

Yankee has their Phantom can that is 7.62 and will also fit on the 5.56 flash hider.  I'm wondering if it's pretty quiet?

Most 9mm cans can handle .300 Whisper.  If you get a 9mm can, you can use it on multiple 9mm platforms as well as a .300 Whisper upper (the Trident sounds pretty good on my T/C Contender Whisper).  I believe the majority of 9mm cans could easily handle supersonic .300 Whisper loads (it would be about like shooting a .357 through the can).  If you slip up and fire a full-powered 7.62x39 round through a lightweight 9mm can, I don't know if the can would take it or not.  Using the Whisper gives you a better margin of error.

If you are maximizing use (meaning, buying the minimum number of cans to be used on the maximum number of guns) the answer would depend on what you want to shoot more of - pistol or rifle cartridges.

I've got a small .223 can (too loud on an AR, but sounds good on a 23" Contender).  I've been thinking of getting a .30 caliber can.  It would primarily be used for the .300 Whisper, but could do double-duty on a 5.56 AR15.  The tradeoff is that it would be larger & heavier than a dedicated .223 can.  

The other issue, as you noted, is case prep for the .300 Whisper.  If you are handloading, there is no special case prep for the 7.62x39.  Forming Whisper brass takes a bit more work (as I'm discovering).  

Factory ammo isn't really an issue.  Both are semi-custom propositions, and both cost in excess of $1 per round.

The Whisper gets the nod for reliable mags.  7.62 mags can be difficult to find, and may or may not work when you do.  Again, up to you.

Not sure what the standard twist rate is on 7.62x39.  You can get a Whisper barrel in a 1:8 twist, which gives you the option of shooting bullets up to 240 gr.  Keep in mind that shooting a subsonic 154 gr. .30 caliber bullet is only marginally better than a 147 gr. 9mm.   (with that in mind, just build a shorty 9mm upper and put a 9mm can on it.  Again, the Trident sounds really good here - but weren't you planning on getting one of those anyway?)

With the larger bore diameter of the 7.62x39, I'm not sure if heavy bullets are even available.  Unless you get a barrel custom made with the .308 bore, and then (since you're into a custom barrel) you can get whatever twist you want.  

Just a few things to consider...

I have an AR in 7.62x39 with a 10.5" barrel that I use my YHM .308 can on. I went this route instead of the whisper route because of the cheaper x39 ammo, and don't have any regrets in not choosing the whisper. I tried some EBR subsonic x39 ammo (220gr, I think) & it worked fine, but I only bought one box @ $60-$70/box of 50. I want to learn how to reload to roll my own.

SOUND
Using the subsonic ammo it was VERY quiet.
Using Wolf supersonic stuff, it seems about as loud as a 223 10.5" suppressed. I would have thought it would have been a little quieter having the volume for .308.

WEIGHT
My biggest complaint is the weight - it is heavy! I am thinking of having it turned down to a lighter profile, and getting an OPS Inc 15th model reamed out for the 308 projectile. I checked & they will do this for something like a $20 upcharge.

After I put the x39 together, I loved the quiet subsonics but decided to build a 9mm for ammo costs. I shoot the 9mm all the time because it is super quiet, much cheaper to shoot, & can shoot steel plates up close. It has about a 9" barrel & a HTG Cycle suppressor. If I had to do it over again, I would use about a 5.5" barrel.

I'm thinking .22lr can, 9mm can for the glock and carbine, and .308 to run on AR, AK, and Bolt gun.....but I don't know, that may change before august 28th

I use a 308 can from SAS. He made adapters for my AK's and AR's. I use the same can on my 14.5" MAK90, Yugo folder, WASR and my 10.5 and 11.5 AR's. It does a pretty good job on all. Downside is it's 9" long and heavy.

Yes. On a 16" when I first bought it. I went SBR very shortly after buying the (first) can, I tried it on my 10.5" 223 & it is similar to the HTG I have on there ususally, but tons heavier/longer. I put it on a 7.5" sometimes, as I figure there's little chance of a baffle strike. The weight isn't too bad on that short of a barrel.

If you want to use it primarily on a .308, and sometimes on a 223, or x39 It's probably a good choice. If you want to use it primarily on a 223, & x39 I wouldn't recommend it if you want to shoot offhand much. You can get much smaller/lighter suppressors bored out for that. I have an AR10 & other 30 cal rifles, & I've never put it on one of them because of the weight. I guess most people just shoot them off the bench...... maybe I'll try it one day.   Realistically, I regret buying it. I wish I'd have saved my $ for a titanium 308 can, or had an OPS 15th bored for my x39.

Putting the YHM .308 on a 10" wasn't much different as I remember it.
I'm probably not the best judge, as I think I shot too much before I bought cans.

I know I don't have to use ear protection. It sounds like a .22LR.

My barrel is a Model 1 11.5"   It uses a 1/2-36 to 5/8-24 adapter made up by TROS.

Has anyone talked to a suppressor maker about reaming one of their .223 cans out to .30?

That way you wouldn't have such a heavy piece out on the end of the barrel. The 7.62x39 is not a large cartridge, so you don't need the volume of a standard .30 can to suppress it.

Before I got my YHM 308 can, I talked to AAC and they actually had some 223 cans in stock that were already bored (a couple of years ago), and recently I talked to Steve @ ADCO who said he could order a OPS Inc 15th model that way. I had him profile a 7.62x39 barrel for the OPS 15th when he cut it down for me. I'm stalling on buying the can because I'm not spending any more $ on my x39 until I receive my replacement mags from CProducts, and they actually work.

I ordered a Phantom YHM 308 can to run on my 7.62X39 AR my LTR 308 bolt gun and I also plan on running it on an AK and a AR15 223. I talked to a lot of people and did some internet research and ever one said that the 223 through a 308 can would work OK even though the exit hole is bigger the extra volume of the can makes up it.I'll give you a report in a few weeks ATF cashed my check 06/30
