What the heck kind of locking mechanism is Spyderco's "Compression" lock? I've been looking at their Para-Military, and it has some sort of device on the spine area near the pivot, that Spyderco indicates to be the lock.

How does it work, and is it easy to manipulate?

On a seperate note, anyone have one of their Manix knives? They are my other option if the lock on that Para-Military is crap.

Think of the compression lock as a liner lock with the lock inverted so that rather than having the lock on the bottom, it sits on the top of the handle.  Supposedly, compression locks can withstand greater torsional forces than traditional liner locks.  I've found that the placement of lock on top makes it easier for ambidextrous (one-handed) closing of the blade.

The Manix uses a top lock design (lockback) and it's very solid knife designed for heavy duty use.  Spyderco has great knife designs, uses high-end blade steels and puts out quality products.  I don't think you'll disappointed by either the Para-Military, Maxix or the Mini-Manix.

Well, I finally borke down and bought the Para-Military. I am still getting used to it, but overall I really like the knife. The blade is S30V with G10 scales. The lock is like an inverted liner lock, so instead of using your thumb to disengage it, you use your index finger, which helps to keep your fingers out of the path of the closing blade.

To my door, it was $109, which is $80 below MSRP. For the money, I am impressed. If anyone out there in on the fence about getting the Para-Military, I say go for it.

The Para-Military is an awesome blade, and the compression lock is very sturdy. Just wish it was tip up carry and I would buy one in a second. Great purchase. Report back with your thoughts after further usage.

I own 2 Spyderco compression lock knives, a Yojimbo and a Temperance. They are my everyday carry knives and both work very well. I would buy either one again in a heartbeat. Both hold a great edge too. BSW
