Searched the forum and couldn't find a comparison of the two.

What do users recommend? I'm leaning towards the Springfield for weight savings because I'm just using a red dot not a scout scope

Here is what I have thought of..
-ultimak heavier
-ultimak will stiffen barrel for better accuracy??
-ultimak has more rail space so you can mount a scout scope

The SAI scout mount isn't milspec. So some mounts won't work. Word is that SAI will remachine it for you to picatinny standards. Also the SAI mount is on the barrel and some have claimed heat issues with optics after rapid fire of a few mags. I am still going to use the SAI mount until something makes me not use it.

The Ultimak is a far better mount for a Scout setup.

I wouldn't count on it stiffening the barrel for more accuracy though. I don't think it works like that.

By design, it doesn't. The clamps are laid out to let the barrel expand without putting a bunch of force on them.

Correct.

Another advantage of the UltiMAK or SHG from M14.ca is that it's lower
than the Springfield mount and you should not need to add a cheek riser.

I would try to find some people in your home town forum that one or the other mount/sight combos you're considering and see if you can meet up to shoot them some day in exchange for beer & pizza or something. Nothing like seeing it and seeing if you like to use it before you put the money down.

A friend has a socom with with an aimpoint mounted and I really like the setup but I would like to try the ultimak so I might do that

Micro T-1 on the M8

That's exactly what I'm going for with the wood stock does it feel front heavy?

Ive noticed that while heavier my wood stock balances better then my GI fiberglass stock so I keep switching trying to decide if I like heavier/balanced or lighter/front heavy

The M8 adds very little weight.
Keep your optic small and it will balance nicely.

You can easily move the action with M8/optic installed from
one stock to another before you settle on whats just right.

How does the M8 install and hold a solid zero?

See below. I'm an idiot.

4 bands or clamps secure the M8

M14.ca's SHG utilizes 3 bands/clamps in the same location.

I was mistaken, the clamps are not in the same location.

Bump,

Another guy here looking at forward mounting options.  I really like Midwest Industries scout style mounts, but they are specific to the optic(ie Aimpoint micro, doc optics, RMR, etc...)  I like the idea of switching to a scout scope if the mood hits... so a non dedicated rail is preferred, though a micro and that mount is a kick ass setup......

In any case,  anyone done a full comparison between the m14.ca mount and the Ultimak?

I've exchanged emails with the guy that runs m14.ca, the mount looks nice, but at about $40-$50 more than I can get the Ultimak M8 for when it may just be the same thing in essence....

The .ca one has one less band, but the last band is wide, so pretty much the same contact, surface area for heat dispersion is likely similar, height is the same as with a low mounted aimpoint you can co-witness.....

Anyone use both and can comment/input?

ETA - H20 has pics of the M14.CA mount and the ultimak, here is a pic of the MI scout mount.

I tried the MI scout mount (T-1) and liked it, but like the M8 more
because I can easily change optics or run without optics as needed.

Back to the M8/SHG comparison, the SGH is quite a bit lighter than the M8.

Wow, weight difference is substantial!

M14.CA's SHG is lists as 6.65 ounces

The ultimak does not list a weight on the site but a quick google search came up with a guy on M14forum listing it as 10.25.

The M1A standard weighs in a little under 10 lbs. every ounce counts, thats for sure, I guess the question is how much those 4.4 ounces are worth to you as a shooter.

Thanks for the pic of the MI unit H20.  The cheapskate in me wants to save money on the mount, but in the long run, not sure it'd be worth it as I could only run my micro on it and nothing else.....

hmmm.... decisions decisions....

Yes, every ounce counts and there is just a 10.4 oz
difference between the two M14s pictured below...

The Comp M4 weighs 13.5 oz.
