I first posted this in the Precision rifles forum, but this looks like a more appropriate spot to get some input...

I currently have a hand-me-down old spotting scope that I use at my local 100 yard range (I don't have maker or magnification info handy). It's borderline not-useful, since it doesn't have quite enough magnification to clearly spot 5.56 holes in a standard 100-yard rifle target (black rings) on anything but a perfectly sunny day.

I would like to replace it but am not sure what sort of magnification I should be looking at? Again, I will be at my local 100 yard range 95% of the time and I shoot mostly non-magnified ARs (EOTechs). I know I don't want a big rig or lot of muss-and-fuss set-up, and am wondering if my best bet is for a compact spotter with maybe 10-20X magnification that I can hand-hold, or if I need more than that, say a 15-30X unit that's tripod based??

I've tried to do some internet homework here, but most of the advice I've seen is either for hunters or birders. Any recommendations for a quality 100-yard setup in the $200-$300 range or so? Thanks for any advice here.

Will

Konus makes some real nice 80 and 100mm spotting scopes.  Should be well within your budget.
