The only suppressed M14 I have seen was one by SCRC but it functioned flawlessly. There was still a lot of gas blow back from the action but it was very quiet.
Why do you say it will not work? Is it something about the OPs can? Or just a general statement? |
M14s over-function with a suppressor on board, too much back pressure, though some work better than others depending on the design.
The M14 with an OPS Inc can on the end needs a smaller gas port diameter of .062 to function reliably and safely. I'm sure Bixler's suppresed M14 had a samller gas port too.
ETA: Mounting the suppressor on an M14 has always been hit or miss too. Alignment issues, accuracy degradation, etc. The OPS M14 sleeve is interesting in that it's 5" long and friction fit in order to rigidize and support the barrel in front of the gas cylinder. Unlike most current AR barrels which are are very thick-walled due to a smaller bore diameter and can therefore use a simple collar to mount the OPS can, the M14 has a lot of exposed barrel in front of the gas cylinder and the barrel wall is very thin there so weight on the end is an issue. The OPS sleeve when fited properly actually has a accuracy enhancing effect due to the increased rigidity it provides up front, even without the can. Trouble comes if and when the sleeve makes contact with the gas cylinder lock, then accuracy drops terribly. It needs to be really tight with a 1/10" gap before the gas cylinder lock.
Anyway, fun project.
