Ok a few weeks ago I bought a Robinson Armament XCR, it's still NIB. The reason why it's still NIB is because shortly after purchasing it I started looking at AR's pretty hard and the desire for one has not died down. I know the ARFcomer motto is buy both but I just can't do that at this time.

My plan was/is to buy a nice rifle and put some of the "Tacticool" items on it, (Aimpoint, Aimpoint magnifier, foregrip, light, BUIS's, four rail handguards). If this new rifle were to be an AR I was seriously thinking about buying a piston upper for it also.

Well I have the money saved up for the said extras/add-ons. I just can't decide if I should keep the XCR and put everything on it or sell the XCR and buy a nice AR and put everything on it, including a piston upper.
I should state that when this whole project began my plan was to build a go-to weapon for, well you know, the kind that sits beside your bob.

So should I keep the XCR that is nice but still very new and rare, or buy an AR that is nice, well known, and parts for it can be found pretty readily for it?

I would sell the XCR and build two AR-15 carbines.

Two is one, one is none.

Build your own. You should be able to afford two decent opitcs (well aimpoint/EOtech price range) and maybe one QD light. I wouldn't go with the gas piston AR's. I don't see the need.

Unless you truely love the feel of the XCR, than I'd say with your money standpoint you'd be better off getting rid of it and buying a complete POF 415.
That way you'd get a more reliable and cleaner running piston driven AR style system and one that can take a whole line of the great AR accessory options that are out there.

Thank you for the replies. Both posts say to sell the XCR and get an AR, or two. I think I'll be happier if I do. Not that theres anything wrong with the XCR, I think it's a great rifle. I just think the AR will fit into my end plan a little better.

I also plan on getting the piston upper for the AR. Some say they're a fad, Some tell of great experiences. From all of the positives I've heard I think they're a great addition to the AR platform.

I would keep the XCR and shoot the heck out of it. The more I shoot mine, the more I like it. The cost of all the accessories(BUIS, aimpoint, VFG, etc) will be the same either way. I would be suprised if a piston AR would be much cheaper than the XCR to be worth selling it and starting over.

I'd go this way also the more I mess around with other rifle platforms, the less I think of ARs. BTW: Have 5 and never shot them anymore. Should have never purchased a FAL. The XCR is also much "thinner" then the POF

Piston uppers are a solution looking for a problem. Put 5 cases of Wolf through your M4gery in a year and you will have confidence in the gas system.

Keep the XCR, get the optics and keep an eye out for a good deal on a AR later.
Your just second guessing yourself.
Remember, the grass is always greener.....
Having is never as good wanting.
Sell the XCR and you will regret it. Big time if the Democrats win Nov 3rd.

+1

I almost always regret it when I sell one firearm to buy another.

I have a feeling your right on the "second guessing" part. I seem to have a problem with that sometimes. Considering that I didn't really start wanting an AR until after I bought the XCR, and without really having any negative opinions about the XCR. You all have made great points for the "keep the XCR" side. I am definitely getting an AR, Now I just need to figure out a way to keep the XCR also.

I know what you mean by always wanting more, that's how i picked it up in your post.
The best way to know you made the right call is to go shoot it

I'd take it out to the range and shoot it first. It just might turn out to be an ultrareliable tackdriver. That's what I like to do with all my rifles. Shoot them, keep the good ones and sell off the rest.

piston uppers are the way to go man.....that is the only reason why I would keep the XCR.....now the reason I would sell is because Robinson Arms customer service is shady at best....I also dont like how they just put the M96 and its parts on the back burner....what good is a rifle if I cant get spare parts down the road? when the next best thing hits the same will happen to the XCR that has happened to there M96, or even the VEPR.

If you like the Feel and look of the M4 I say sell the XCR and look at a Leitner Wise M4 with the gas piston upper....LMT will be coming out with one soon as well,
