I just bought an FN TPS shotgun with a backbored barrel and was wondering if it is safe to shoot rifled (foster style) slugs out of it. I checked the manual for a Mossberg 835 (which also has a backbored barrel) and they say no. Seeing as how FN is being no help, I hope you guys can give me an answer.

Thanks,
Keith

Its absolutely safe as long as your choke is not tighter than Improved Cylinder (occassionally, Modified will work). I dont know what Mossberg has the 835 choked at, that may be the reason.

The Mossberg 835 is overbored, the barrel is larger the 12 gauge, almost 10 gauge to produce better patterns when shooting 3 1/2" shells. A slug could turn and get caught in an overbored barrel. This is not the case in a backbored barrel.
