Well, it looks like I may be getting a little bit of extra money soon. Nothing big, but a few bucks that I don't have plans for. I tried to think of something that I've wanted for a long time, but never had the cash for, when it came to me. I've always admired the design of the Luger and would like to get one from WWII.

Anybody know anything about collecting them / what to look out for / where to buy one from? I presume that, like most collectible stuff from that era, there are a lot of fakes out there.

Tag, because this is VERY relevant to my interests.

I recommend you check these guys out. They really know their stuff.

Simpsons ltd. is supposed to be a pretty reputable dealer for Lugers, but their prices are a bit steep.

for a WWII version that won't set you back more than $1500, look at the Finnish Lugers. They are usually non-matching serial numbered with black plastic grips

be ready to shell out at least $800-1500 for an in-expensive version, as you know Lugers are big time collectable and there is a fixed supply, they haven't been built since 1942

the most inexpensive Lugers besides these are typically the Erfurt built pistols and the 1920 civilian/ police reworks. DO some research before you lay down the cash.

they are very neat pistols to say the least

here's a pic of my 1917 Erfurt P.08

Also, do you want a shooter, or a collectible gun?

If you get a shooter, you will want a non-matching gun so that you don't break a matched part which would result in a loss of value.

I have been looking for a Luger, but don't want to spend alot. I have seen some on Gunbroker for ~800 that are mostly matching. You use to be able to find non-matching for around ~600 in decent condition.

For collectors purpose, look for all matching. With Lugers most of the parts were numbered/serialized together. Also try to find one without import markings.

If you want a shooter, then get a 9mm.  Do not get a 0.30cal bottleneck unless you plan to reload.

Probably the best deal for a cheap safe shooter is a dipped Russian or East German import, they run $600 and up

IMOP avoid Bubba garage built mis-matched #'s cobbled together Luger parts guns like the plague.
