I have a chance to purchase a SW 625 (the guy said it was a 3rd generation) in what appears to be great condition (almost mint) for $400. The barrel is about a 4 inch barrel.

Is this good price?
Also, I thought these required moon clips as this one does not have any. Do these require moon clips?

That is a good price on a used piece.
One of my friends just bought a new one for in the mid $500's. Yes they require moon clips that are available from Brownells. Priced at $4.95 fro 5 blued or $10.95 SS for Wilson brand. They also carry the S&W brand for $6.65 for 4. One thing you will want to get if you deside to buy the firearm is a De-mooner by Graco for taking the spent brass and rounds back off of the moon clip.

I have a 610 that I shoot in IPSC/USPSA competition and really like it.

$400.00, it's a fair deal.

i picked up a S&W 629 for $350.00 (that was a good deal).

you will need to buy moon clips separately.
also get a "demooner" from Dillon.

Picked it up!!!!
I am more than very impressed with the trigger. Just need to purchase some moon clips now. Man, the agony of having to wait for the clips to come in.

Go ahead and shoot it while you wait. There is a ledge in the cylinder that will seat and headspace the 45acps. You just have to push or pick the empties out for a while.

When the clips get in, you'll have a hard time loading them. There is a secret handshake involved and if you promise not to tell any of the uninitiated, I'll pass it along.

Roll the cartridge in, don't push it.

It's a good price.

But before you run out and buy moon clips make sure that it's a 45 ACP and not a 45 LC. Both of my 625's are in 45 Long Colt. For 45 ACP I stick to the 1911.

While I love my S&W 25-5, I cannot figure out why guys buy the .45acp versions & then have to fool with the moon clips.

Like DavidC, I use my autos for acp work.

$400 is a great deal.those things go for close to $600 new.

I had one with a 5 inch barrel and that thing was the most incredibly accurate pistol I've ever had experience with.

Personally I like the moon clips,easy load/unloading.

I regretfully traded it off.It is the one gun I've gotten rid off that I've seriously thought of replacing.

From my experience its probably the most accurate .45 ACP handgun you can buy, including all those $2000+ tricked out auto's.
