I have a chance to buy a SAR4800 that is in unfired condition for $800 Which I think is a good deal. The question I have is about the markings. On the left side it has SAR4800, on the right side it has SAR-48-MATCH. I was under the impression that SAR 48 was pre-ban and SAR 4800 was post ban. It has the regular pistol grip and buttstock. Can anyone tell me any thing about it?

There are a very few SAR-4800's that are pre '89 ban rifles. Springfield Armory can verify the SN to be sure. The majority of these rifles are post '89 ban, and as such you could convert the thumbhole stock to a true pistol grip and stock if you have the correct US parts count as per 922R.

Sgt_Gold: Not an expert, but here my nickel's worth. The original FAL-clone imported by Springfield Armory from Brazil using the Imbel receiver was called the SAR48 with a pistol grip & flash suppressor, then came the Bush1's EO that banned import of foriegn assualt weapons. The SAR48 was changed to SAR4800, with thumb-hole stock and muzzle stub. But again call Springfield Armory for the correct configuration at the time of import.

I think I said as much in my post.

its a good deal as it is a factory built Imbel gun, whether or not it is a SAR-48 or 4800. Throw some US parts in it, and you could make it a cool imbel para folder from a kit from dealers wharehouse
