Morning gents,

About two years ago I stocked up on my pistol primers –– just before the "rush" took place.  Bought several thousand Remington small and large pstol primers. Had always used Winchester primers in the past with excellent results but the Remington primers were on sale at the time.

Most of my shooting involves 9mm and 45 and the Remington primers have works great.

However I've had a few "problems" with several of my wheelguns lately.  I've had several primers that have failed to fire on the first hammer strike –– or failed to fire at all !   At first I thought it was my reloads/revolvers but I've traced it back to the primers –– I think.

I picked up a carton of Federal primers a few weeks ago and the problems with my wheelguns seems to have disappeared.  Seems all of the Federal primers go BANG all the time –– in several hundred rounds so far and in several different wheelguns.

So . . . has anyone had any problems with Remingtom pistol primers ? ?

What say you ? ? ?

Thanks ! !

Federal pistol primers have softer cups than Remington. I had the same issue in my 629. One day I tore it down for cleaning and lubrication and noticed the hammer spring screw was almost completely backed out. I tightened it up, and voila––no more light strikes.

The better question you need to consider is has the strain screw backed out of your revolver?  Have you had new lighter springs installed?  And, last but not least make sure you are seating your primers deep enough from the get go!  If seconds strikes are lighting them, then perhaps you are the culprit?

I bought Remington primers, specifically, because they were softer than Federals.  I had a Glock 21 that would not always set of the Federals, when every gun I owned would.  I had two armorers look at the gun, and one changed the bushings, firing pin, and put in a heavy spring.  Same issue.  The Remington primers solved that problem for me.

I eventually sold the 2nd Gen 21 and bought a 3rd Gen 21.  It has no problems with the Federal primers, and my Glock 30 didn't have a problem with either.

Federal Primers are the easiest to ignite primes, NOT REMINGTON.

Rimfire ammo doesn't use a boxer primer; sorry, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Federal cups are softer than Remington as mentioned earlier.

To OP: If you are having this issue in wheel guns only, check that hammer strut screw. It solved the problem for me before I opened the new case of Federal primers.

Make sure your primer wasn't installed backwards

Remington quality:

I've been using Remington large pistol primers for my 45 ACP loads this year and last year.  I'm shooting mostly a 21SF and a Colt Government Model.  Every one of them went off.  So far

I have had problems with remington small pistol primers in my revolvers and in my semi autos. I loaded 100 .32 acp for my ppk and about 1 in 8 have failed to fire. Thank goodness all I had are gone.

No problems and no failures to fire with Remington LP primers in Glock 21, 36, Colt 45's, or Sig 220. Never a misfire with a lot of rounds down range. I use both RP 2 1/2's and CCI 300 LP primers for 45 ACP loads as well as a couple other calibers. Also, for about 30 plus years and not a failure with Remington 7 1/2's or 9 1/2's either.  Could be the secret to my success is checking EVERY round for high or cocked primers? I've had one failure to fire with a CCI 500 primer when I first started loading and found the problem was a batch that had some high primers. One didn't fire but fired the second time. That made me a fan of primer pocket uniforming tools plus checking every seated primer with a flat edge over the case head held up to a light to see the slit of light under the straight edge and the primer head. The one failure to fire was when a fellow shooter at the range asked to shoot my revolver. I was pretty embarrassed when the expensive revolver and my hand load didn't fire. That was about 30 plus years ago though. It doesn't take very long to check several hundred cases for properly seated primers with my method.
 Now I hope I haven't jinxed myself!

I had a problem back in 1994 with Rem primers. When I called them they tried to tell me I didn't store them the right way. I sent a picture of my storage room and of over 500 primers with the anvil upside down. They never called or tried to contact me and I will never buy anything made by Rem. That's IMHO.

Rem are my favorite primers, I use only 7 1/2 BR's in .223 and 5 1/2 & 1 1/2 in .40 S&W with never a failed primer and they are the most accurate also, I do use only #41's in my 6.8 though since the loads are pretty hot and I've seen CCI-400 pierce in SAAMI loaded SSA rounds(not Tac loads) so they just are not strong enough for a full power SAAMI load much less a warm spec-II load pushing upward of 55K psi.
