Just get a box of 62 gr Barnes TSX and call it a day. It is very unlikely you will need more than a mag full if SHTF.

I'm looking for some decent components myself for the same reason.
Looking here: http://ammo.ar15.com/project/Self_Defense_Ammo_FAQ/index.htm#.223 It states that the 60 gr Nosler Partition JSP is GTG for barrier penetration. You haven't mentioned what twist your running but I'm guessing if you already load 68gr and 75gr, stabilizing 60gr isn't going to be an issue. I'd be interested in seeing what loads you work up and how they perform. Only having one mag for barrier penetration really doesn't make sense. If it works stack it up. |

If SHTF you won't be searching through piles of specialty ammunition, you'll shoot what you can get into your rifle right now.

Even though I carry a .357 Sig appropriately loaded for windshield/car bodies, the times I feel we may be exposed to a hostile in a vehicle we always have AR's along.
Might as well have them suitably loaded. |

I have Barnes TSX in 70, 62, 55, & 53gr, at least a 100 of each and about 500 of the 70gr, if that wont stop what ever your shooting at you might want to call for help.

gets the job done on barriers, great range, great at CQB - just a little more $$$ per round once you get a barrel, bolt and a few mags. |

Since 7.52 isn't an option in this thread I guess that answer doesn't help much...
Is the 60gr Nosler partition a good choice for us mere civilian mortals to hand load for barrier penetration ? |

When I think of barrier breaching, small arms of .30 caliber and less don't enter my view. A 12 gauge shotgun with slugs would probably be the closest to hand for just about everyone, or a dangerous game rifle of .358 and larger would be a choice in some cases, and I have those choices, too.
I suppose a .223 Rem is adequate if the toughest target expected is a car windshield. The best way to find out is to experiment. Buy a few junk cars. Shoot the windshields. Include a witness plate inside that will collect bullet fragments. Then decide. |
