Slacker,
I checked my Blue Book and my much better, IMHO, Standard Catalog of Firearms and don't see any mention of a "Red Chieftain" anything. That sounds more like a model and not a manufacturer - maybe take another look at the shotgun ?? |

I searched the heck out of Google and came up with this:
Red Chieftan: Trade name used by the Supplee Biddle Hardware Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on inexpensive pocket pistols they retailed. Perhaps they also made a shotgun with that name? |

Both the Crescent Arms Co. (later bought by Savage) and the H&D Folsom Arms Co. built thousands of handguns and shotguns around and just after the turn of the century which were often marked with various trade names designated by the retailers who were their customers..."Red Chieftan" almost certainly being one. Possibly Suplee Biddle Hardware bought a few under their name and they did not sell well...who knows?

ikor, actually I replied more completely via email and came to the same conclusion as you. Most likely "Red Chieftain" was a private label brand with the actual gun being manufactured by 'who knows'. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with this shotgun but finding the manufacturer may be difficult though likely not impossible. |
