I am looking for a fixed blade knife with a 3-4 inch blade that includes a kydex sheath that will mount to the pals webbing on my chest rig. I would like to stay in the $100 area.

So far i like the look and sound of a Rat Cutlery / DPX Gear Hest.

I was going to recommend the H.E.S.T. or one of the 3/4/5s.

The H.E.S.T. is probably better size-wise; I am running both it and a 5 and the 5 takes up a lot of real estate.

I'm not real fond of the Bladetech sheaths but that's what they come with...they don't lock in very well and will not stand up to much contact w/o popping open, at least partially.  I'm looking for something better (the 5 has an optional MOLLE sheath).

I used to laugh about people cutting themselves with their ESEEs...until my H.E.S.T. "bit" me...sharp buggers they are.

If you plan to pound on it or pry with it, get an ESEE 4.  If you don't plan to pound on it or pry with it, get an ESEE 3.

quick question - ESEE knife made from 1095 or the RAT cutlery in D2 made by Ontario?

Quoted:
ESEE.

really? how come? the RAT is very similar to the ESEEs except it's made from D2 tool steel. I always heard it's superior to 1095 that ESEE uses. not true?

ESEE has redesigned (improved) some of their products since leaving Ontario...  I think the quality control at Rowen is superior to the QC at Ontario...  ESEE products come with a lifetime N.Q.A. warrantee...  I don't find D2 to be impressive enough to make Ontario knives worth considering...  Just my POV - YMMV...

I got my HEST today and its sweet! I've already convinced myself i need another budget fixed blade for my 2nd chest rig.

Talking about Ontario, is the RD4 not a good choice? I still have an "in" with a company that deals in Ontario so i can get it new for 65 bucks.
