I want a new knife and I've been looking at the Ontario Ranger Afgan Bush or the Becker BK2 Companion. I don't need a new knife I just want one and I already have a RAT RC-4 and a bunch of other knives. Between the two in the title which is prefered? I like look of the Afgan but the sheath seems poor (if I get that one I'll probably experiment with kydex) and the handle on the Becker seems like it would be on the slick side. Price appears to be similar. Opinions?

ETA: I was looking at the specs of the BK7 and it might be an option as well. Its bigger but thinner than the BK2 which might handle better. Looks like it also comes with another small knife as well and 2 for 1 is always good Any thoughts?

I like the Ranger knives. I don't have a Afghan but have the RD-4 and the RD-4 Bush. As you mentioned the sheaths are not great. I got kydex from Chestnut Ridge Knife Shop. They have sheaths for the Afghan also.

I've thought seriously about getting the Campanion. It always gets good reviews. As you mentioned, my concern with the Becker is the slick handles. They make micarta slabs for the BK2 but it almost doubles the price of the knife.

hmm, the Ontario Rangers keep getting mixed reviews. I like the look/design but the execution seems like it is hit or miss. I'm wondering if I should get the Becker and if necessary try a home stippling job on the handles. If anyone has either knife that they can post some pics I'd love to see them, the pics online don't show a lot.

BK2 owner here. Happy with it. The sheath? Not so much. YMMV

I think I'm leaning toward the BK7 now, anyone know if it still comes with the small BK13 knife piggybacked or was that limited item?

Not sure on that, but as an FYI I got my (BK2) from a dealer on Amazon.com for a smok'n price and shipping was free and fast.

The BK7 is a jack of many trades, but the master of none. The BK9 is a great chopper, but to big for a utility/camp knife. The BK2 is a great utility, but stinks for big cutting and splitting.

The BK7 is a good all around knife and built like a tank.

EDIT: The BK13 was a limited item. The BK13s that came in the combo are Chinese made. If you get a Cold Steel look for the older/first production US Made models.

Well, the BK7 is on its way. I wish Kabar would start making the BK10, that one looks perfect for what I want.

Good choice, but I'm partial towards Beckers.

EDIT: There is a guy in the Becker section of Bladeforums that has modified a few blades to the 5.5" of the BK10.

I saw some of those, I'm going to try out the BK7 as is and if I find it too big I may get it modified in the future. The new Becker/Ritter knife (MK2?) looks really nice too but was more than I wanted to spend right now.

I have the BK2, A sturdy little Jasper and holds a very sharp edge and unless I lose it, should last my lifetime.
