What is the accepted standard of measuring barrel length in a rifle, and with our AR rifles in particular?

Also, I can't find the data on barrel length vs velocity. Especially on the AR10. If anyone can repost the info, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks

You measure the barrel from the bolt face to the very end of the metal.

In other words,  close the bolt to the rifle,  insert a cleaning rod in the muzzle and let it slide all the way down to the bolt.  Mark the cleaning rod right where it exits the barrel and remove the rod.  With a measuring tape, measure the length of the rod that was in the barrel.

Thank you GeneStoner, for the info. I suspected as much, but needed confirmation.

If anyone else has an idea on the velocity question, I'd appreciate it. Specifically, how much velocity is lost for each inch decrease in barrel lenght? {average}

It depends on the ammo as well as the barrel length.
