What variant is this M2 or what is the reasoning for the barrel supports. I searched around and couldn't find much info. Just curious.

After a closer look at the ammo, is it some type of blank adapter?

Yuppers, that is a blank adapter, and it is a pain in the butt to take off and put on. Makes the weapon front heavy too.
