I'm fixin' to purchase my first AK.  I'm looking at a pre-ban but the prices of the post-bans look very attractive.  The guy wanting to sell me his tells me that, even though they fit, it is illegal to use pre-ban mag's in a post-ban gun.  It he just trying to make the sale or what?
Thanks

Tell him what he has been putting in his pipe is illegal then go get a post ban. The preban mags are legal.

You can use preban mags in a post ban gun, you just cant use post ban hi cap mags in a post ban gun.  Bluemax

You can't use post ban hi-capacity mags in any gun unless you are LEO or active duty military.

Pre-ban mags in a post-ban gun are fine.

Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas...

Edited to add the phrase hi-capacity for clarity.

That's "high-capacity" LEO Only Post-ban mags, which are illegal in any rifle.
Why not get an AR?

Same rules apply to AK,AR,or whatever. The guy your dealin with sounds like a shyster.I know there are some real dumb asses out there, but its hard to imagine somebody owning one of these rifles and not knowing that they could use hi-cap mags.

I may be wrong but aren't you only allowed so many imported parts on your postban AK and if that AK is at its limit and you use an imported hi cap it puts your rifle over the limit of imported parts and makes it illegal... I may be wrong on this though.

I believe you need 5 American parts added to an imported gun to make it legal, although my memory is sketchy.

Post-ban SAR-1 purchased last week, NIB for $299. It came with the 40-round mag in the photo. Unless you've got a major need for a prebban folder for 4X the price, just get one of these. You can add the slant muzzle brake for ~ $20.
