I have a fair amount of play in the stock, when I set the rifle down on the floor, on the buttstock, you can feel the receiver/barrel slide down a considerable amount.
What is the best way to get this play eliminated/reduced?

Replace the stock or have it bedded. You can also try shimming it with vanier strips or aluminum tape.

Sounds pretty bad to be honest - I'd say get rid of it and start over.

Unless of course it has a nice, crisp SA/GAW cartouche, in which case you should mail it to me.

Boyd stocks at Midway.

Stock on special this month

I have bought several and have been pleased. These are oversized compared to the WWII stocks, but a little sandpaper will bring it down to whatever size you want.

Dean's Gun Repair

If I weren't going for a GI cartouched stock, I'd get one of these. Absolutely beautiful work. Dean redid a Springfield '03 for me a few years ago and it was a work of art.
