Don't know if any of you contact the Mfg. prior to painting, but I did prior too, for requested wedding gift.  They wanted one of my old Starlight's.  
Starlight said:

The only paint I have found that will work without chipping or flaking off is a polyethylene based paint used for plastic outdoor furniture.  You should be able to find it at Lowe's or Home Depot.
Hope it works out for you.  It may need a few coats, but it works.
