Long been planning on a 10.3" DD barrel with a DD RIS II, but in the boredom of waiting for my SBR stamp...I've grown curious of going the route of a 12.5" DD barrel with a 12" DD RIS II. Looking for some pics and experiences with that setup...

I dont believe that will work.

This 12.5 inch barrel requires a shorter rail.
This is a Stickman picture of the GL/SSC rail with a 2.5 inch barrel.

A rail which you will never ever get ahold of.

That's the biggest 2.5 inch barrel EVAR!

That's a great looking setup.

Too bad a 12.5" barrel won't work with a 12" RIS II.

Why wouldn't it work.

Would it not work if you were to put a longer brake or something of the kind on the barrel?

I think it has to do with how the bottom rail locks up and it not fitting around the gas block or something to that nature.

It has to do with the fact that the barrel actually goes into the receiver. A barrel is measured from the chamber to the crown (or end of flash hider if pinned). You give up about 2" between the barrel being inset into the receiver and the barrel threads getting covered by the flash hider.

Since a rail is external and is measured in overall length, the numbers don't match up. So a 12" rail won't really work on a 12.5" barrel.

For example, on my 16" upper, I can only run either a 13" or 14" rail depending on how it mounts, delta ring or up against the receiver, for it to end at the base of my A2 flash hider.

A 12" rail can work on a 12.5" barrel depending on the muzzle device used.  I've got a Daniel Defense MFR 12.0 on my 12.5" gun and have used both a BattleComp and a Surefire brake on it with no issues.  With the BC, I had it install it prior to the rail.  Because of the longer length of the Surefire and the location of the wrench flats, I could install it with the rail in place.  The rail did not cover the ports of either device.
