Nature made!--easy as can be, I'm surprised it took me this long to figure out the easiest and best looking job. Base coat of Aluma-Hyde II(color of choice) then I break off a section of a pine branch and hit it with the desired colors randomly-don't over do it! Base of desert tan over colors, earth brown/od (AL II) and brown rustoleom camo. Mark |

That shotgun looks fantastic mark5pt56.
What do you guys do for surface prep before painting? I'm geared up to do gun kote but would like to add DuraCoat to my list of options later on. |

I degrease it well, normally brake cleaner, gun scrubber, carb cleaner, etc. Then a rub down with 90% alcohol. paint brush to clean lint.
If it's a small part, I can preheat in the oven and cure it there as well. A heat gun works extremely well for preheating and keeping it hot for a bit. I use the no bake Aluma-Hyde II, but some heat works good with it. A buddy made an oven with heat lamps for those big parts --and no stink in the house. You could probably use a section 10-12" vent pipe with heat lamps for curing? In the summer(not much up there) you can hang in the attic for faster curing if using the AH II. Unless you want the duracoat or baking laquer, the spray cans from Brownell's works fine. The big thing with those is preheating the part and can, the paint seems to flow so much better. I found that a sink of super hot water works great for the can.--and shake the piss out of it. Hopefully this helps! Mark |

Thanks Mark. I have a stove already geared up for gun kote so heating parts won't be a problem..except I can't fit a complete gun in it..I don't think.
Have you ever tried painting it cold, then heating it up with a heat gun to cure it? |

You can paint it cold, not to cold though, at least room temp. A heat gun makes the paint "flow" better-when it hits the material, it will blend and appear more even with no imperfections. If warm/hot and the paint nozzle throws a chunk, it usually evens out on it's own. You get alot of over spray whether using a can or paint gun, at least lay out a bunch of drop clothes to protect the floor/area-plastic grocery bags on your feet/shoes work good to, otherwise that crap sticks!
I don't have a shop, this is just a favor/horse trading type gig every so often. Mark |
