Probably been posted a zillion times (couldn't find it with limited ARFCOM search-fu skills), but here goes:

What barrel length will give the highest typical velocity for .22LR? Obviously it's different depending on the powder type / amount, bullet weight, etc., but with this tiny case it can't be too much different from round to round. My guess is anything longer than ~12 inches or so adds nothing -- in fact, creates drag as pressure curve drops.

Knowledgeable comments desired; wild speculation also welcome!

I've read many a times that 16" is the magic number.
