I read a thread here about one of my weapons where there was a difference between the POI with slugs and buckshot.  This made me think as I have had two incidents over the years where 870 police barrels were returned with both guys saying the rear sight was all the way down and they were still high with slugs.  And the buckshot group POI was way lower then the slugs.

I repositioned the read sight and hit the range. I was using just plain ass 00 buck and Remington sluggers.  No issue, both POI pretty much the same and the slugs were dead on at 25 yards.  I found out both were using their Department required ammo and it was the new slugs with tactical wadding and the buckshot was Tactical low recoil stuff.  I don't remember the brands.

My question is how may people have found this issue where the POI of the center of the buckshot pattern is much lower then the POI of slugs and is it only with that type of ammo.

I don't want to take anymore perfect barrels back.  I was able to resolve the issue on one by installing a higher front sight and the guy was satisfied as he used mostly slugs.  Having an idea from you guys what some of the issues you have found with various brands can save me the cost and hassle of having to go buy this stuff and shoot it.  I can benefit from your experience with this stuff.

Im the guy that you're talking about. I bought a case full of the federal tru-ball slugs and a case of federal flight control because they both group really well out of my gun, they just dont group in the same place
If i had just a lick of common sense i would have realized that i should have checked to make sure that the buck and slugs both grouped tightly and in the SAME PLACE before buying a large quantity of both. WIth a little more preplannin i probablly would have ended up with a case of federal flight control 00 buck and a case of remington slugs or brenekke or something.

The slugs are actually about 6 inches lower than the damn buckshot. I have been able to holdover pretty effectively and when i burn up all the slugs i will try to find a different brand that shoots a little higher with the same level of accuracy. The slugs arent even reduced recoil so im not sure why theres such a point of impact change.

Its definately NOT the shotgun, i know that for certain. The smoothbore gun itself wouldnt be able throw slugs low and then throw buck high, theres no plausible reason for that to happen. Its the ammo having differing velocities thats causing that. I think it just comes down to finding two different rounds that match.

You definately cant do anything to the gun itself to make it throw slugs in one direction and buck in the other. If you figured that out you would either be defying the laws of physics or some kind of mad shotgun scientist and either way you would get rich quick and be able to pay somebody else to worry about it.

Basically theres still work to do but thats on my end not yours. My department just let us start using  slugs a month or two ago so i havent really perfected the setup yet.

I was really not responding to your post but just got me thinking about the ammo issue.   The other two barrels were 18.5" Rifle sight barrels and both guys were LEO's using Department ammo so they could not expiriment with other ammo.  I simply want to learn what ammo is doing this the most and if a guy is having problems with a barrel on one of my shotguns I can tell him the issue.   Changing the front sight blade is a quick fix to get the slugs down but then that moves the buckshot also.

I figured out who you are by your last post.  Check the e-mail I sent you.

message received and im stunned, I'll call you tomorrow when i get the chance.

Also, i would think the only thing you can do is figure out a recommended ammo pair for regular guys and tell the patrol guys to get their front sight post fixed or try to fix their supervisors heads so they would be able to select an ammunition pair that works.

Unfortunately talking sense into the command staff is probably only a little more difficult than changing the direction of the stars in the sky.

What i have noticed is the faster slugs hit lower and the slower slugs hit higher, due to time in brl and the effects of recoil. Add to that no two slug loads shoot to the same point of impact.

I have a 18.5 MOD RS barrel on my work gun.  With the rear sight bottomed out it shoots POA/POI with Remington Slugger value paks and the Flite Control 00 buck shot that I'm issued.  The low-recoil slugs I'm issued at work (any/all so far) all shoot high and hold larger groups than the full power slugs.  My solution is to only use the 00 buck shot at work, and use the full power slugs for training/matches.  The reduced recoils are usable at closer ranges if I aim low, but since we're no longer allowed to carry slugs on duty it's a moot point now.

J.D. took the time to help me out with this and even sent me a taller front sight he had in the shop (didn't work out but that's another issue) to try to "fix" the problem with my barrel.  IMHO the problem is with the low-recoil slugs being issued, they all shoot high compared to the 00 buck shot and full power slugs.

Thanks for the help JD and Stay Safe,
Rob
