How common is it for a range to no allow use of full metal jacket ammo? I never paid any attention to this in the past, and no it seems nobody allows it. And they are checking! They even dis-allowed some crap soft points, saying it was just lead coated FMJ.

What's up?

Sounds odd to me, I shoot at American Shooting Center and they  have no such restrictions. Most indoor ranges don't allow lead ammo and require FMJ in pistol calibers. Sounds like a money making scam to get ya to buy their ammo.

Where is this your talkin about?

Never heard of that problem here.

The outdoor ranges here don't care but i've heard rumors about some being concerned with lead.

The only FMJ they don't allow around here is the steel jacketed stuff.

One range I go to had a big fire because of the steel jacketed 7.62x39.

The indor ranges here prefer FMJ (as long as it doesn't contain steel) and some prohibit exposed lead bullets.

FMJ and hollowpoints are OK here, no tracers or penetrators though.

I've run into it a few times, mostly indoor ranges that are using flat steel plating for a backstop, which won't allow any metal jacketed ammo, whether it be FMJ or soft tips. Many older ranges just have plate steel mounted against the wall, which doesn't provide any deflection of the bullet. In lead only bullets the lead flattens against the plate and drops to the floor. But in jacketed ammo, the jacket tends to ricochet, sometimes back to the shooter.

It seems that the ranges that use 'bullet traps' rather than stops, allow jacketed ammo, as the steel is angled to direct the ricochet downwards into the trap.

I've even heard of some ranges that prohibit it outdoors, but I've never run into it myself.

As for the 'lead coated FMJ'. That's a new one on me. As far as I know, nothing like that exists. Sounds like another person who doesn't know what he is talking about, or is making up responses to support his reasoning.

The range I go to the most (only due to proximity to my house) doesn't allow any FMJ or what they call "rapid fire"......

By the way its Quail Creek Gun Range just north of the Texas Motor Speedway in Ft.Worth, Tx.

Mr. Wilson, it is Winchester shooting range in Dallas that I am talking about. Where is American Shooting Center?  I have not had a chance to check it out myself but the claim was that the tips of my "crappy" FMJ was coated with lead to give the appearance of being a soft point.  The reasoning from the range was penetration and ricochets.

American Shooting Center is in w. Houston, (nicest place in Houston w/ outdoor pistol ranges and rifle ranges out to 600). Sorry, I assumed you were from around here, Tx. Hwy. 59 runs thru town.

What do they want you to shoot there if FMJ is verbotten?

If their worried about penetration and ricochets that must be an indoor range.

I believe no FMJ rules come from potential ricochets.  FMJ is much more likely to ricochet off of hard objects than HP or SP.  The range I go to outside of Austin disallows the use of FMJ on the rifle range, because some dumbasses bought all the property around the range, and sued the range.  The range won the suit, but only with the stipulation that they disallow FMJ.

No, Winchester is an outdoor range, but does have a golf course nearby.  According to the rangemaster, that rule has been in place for over 10 years.

Can anyone in Dallas suggest an outdoor range that is not so critical about FMJ.

That's the range nearest my house, but since I shoot a lot of FMJ surplus ammo (Mosin Nagants, AR15, Garand) I end up driving south to Red's instead, or out to Manor. What a pain...

TX59,

See my rant titled I cant belive this happened to me!! from a few weeks ago, if you can. It is about the a-holes at the Garland Public shooting range, and how they treated me. This no FMJ thing is a real pain in the butt.
You can go to the Collin County Range in McKinney right on hwy 380, and they allow FMJ, but they are closed on Sundays, and close at I think 6pm all other nights. (local residents complained, court mandated closing time...BS). Other than that we have to find some private land to shoot on here in the Dallas area, if you do find some let me know!!
My in-laws live in South Central AR, on 100+ acres, but 4.5 hours is a long drive to shoot.

I live in North Central Texas, and have also noticed MOST of the ranges around here do NOT allow FMJ Bullets. There is a range,(If you Want To Call it That) In Sanger Texas, about 40-45 miles north of Dallas. I believe it is Called "Magnum Sports?". It is called Magnum Something or another? Anyway, These guys Don't care what you shoot or how fast you shoot it. The even allow the full autos, the last time I checked. About two years ago. It is located on Duck Creek road in Sanger. The place is basically just an old gravel pit with a trailer house as an office. Call information and get the number, they used to have some strange Hours of Operation. I dont know if they are still in business. HOPE THIS HELPS

I've had the problem too but it has always been over the steel jackets.  They run the rounds up against a magnet.  Does anyone know why most ranges don't allow tracers?

Kev, the answer to the NO TRACER rule is very simple...tracers burn, red hot, they do not care what they burn or where. I have been on many machine gun ranges and tank table VIII+ ranges that have large scorch marks from where the 4-in-1s have set the grass, underbrush afire. So in that vain it makes alot of sense. Heck just the last civilian MG shoot I was at they had started a brush fire from some tracers. And this was after about 1 week of solid rain in MN!

I too live in the DFW area. I have been looking (and hoping) for a range for years that will allow FMJ ammo. Winchester, those a-holes-I'll NEVER give them a dime again. Have not tried Quail Creek but from what I have read above, they do not allow it. Alpine Range (south of Ft. Worth) is a no-go as well. Years ago I use to go to the LBJ National Grasslands-till they stopped all shooting so the "horse people/riders" could have it all to themselves (no-I do not have anything against them as a group). Think we're losing the gun fight? Lock and load and no place to go.  I guess I could try the Magnum Something Range mentioned above (and drive 1 1/2 hours), but can anyone verify they are still around?

If I wasn't already married I'd be looking for a nice farm/ranch girl who's pre-gun family has plenty of land close to DFW!

I live in Lexington, KY.  My local range (Bluegrass Sportsmen's League, Wilmore, KY) also does not allow any FMJ for rifle calibers.  They don't mind if the pistols are shooting the FMJ though.  Their reasoning is for range and penetration.  The ranges there are located in one of the highest points in that area.  They are worried about someone shooting over the burms and having that round travel 2 miles to a possible farm house.  That's why they too won't allow any "rapid fire".  On the weekends there is usually a range master that will walk around trying to check on everybody and what they are using.  When I want to shoot FMJ I've got to go to either the Knob Creek range in Louisville (home of the infamous Machine Gun Shoot), or my buddy's farm.

I've been to Alpine range also with the no FMJ stuff.  I was just at "The Shooting Gallery" last weekend and they didn't seem to care what I shot.  It's an indoor range, but the rifle range is only 2 stalls and only 25 yds.  It was good for sighting my scope in, but I'll probably be back at Alpine soon.

For all the DFW'ers out there, there is the Collin County Range in McKinney (Hwy 75 N to Hwy 380 E on the south side of the road about 5mi or so). Nice bunch of guys and they advertise that FMJ is welcome at their range. Been there a couple of times and have had no problems. Only drawback is the early closing hours and the fact that they are closed on Sundays

Some reduced distance silhouette ranges restrict ammo to just lead,, less wear and tear to the silhouette targets.

I had some dumb ass (Chief Rocket Scientist h.gif  ) at Garland outdoor rifle range tell me the same thing. Not that the hill of dirt at the end of the range could tell a difference. He said I couldn't shoot unless I used "HOLLOW POINTS"... Never mind I was there to sight in my SP1 with 55gr. Federal ball.
The ones he had for sale were 45gr. jhp's had been under water during the last flood! and a bargain at $13.99 for 40rds!
Yep, they dazzled me with their ignorance!

DFW Gun Club (25 yrd indoor)allows fmj and full autos, you can even rent MP5's,Thompson, or the M16 used in the movie Scareface.

Quail Creek hasn't allowed fmj for at least 3-4 years.  Guy there (big guy with bad black toupe') told me it was because they were worried about ricochets (sp??) hitting neighborhood livestock.  I used to go early during the week and pretty much shot what I wanted.

You should be OK at Collin Creek.

Haven't been to Sanger so can't comment.

SCREW Winchester...no 'military looking' weapons allowed, and that's been going on for more than a few years.  Dallas Gun Club in Lewisville (south of Vista Ridge Mall on the frontage road) might allow fmj, but bring $$$ to join & pay the monthly dues.

Damn, I sure miss N TX.
