Just bought one from a guy for $100.

It's a little rough, but heck, it's another one that won't be sporterized.

I'd buy that all day long for a hundred bucks.

$100? That's a steal.

Nice Lithgow.

It could be shinier, but it passed the bullet test better than I thought.

You done good my man!

I picked up what could be considered your 42 Lithgow's "pampered twin" - matching, excellent bore, nice metal finish & wood - last summer for $250 and considered it a steal.

They're fun to shoot too - although those sights are a bit tough on my aging eyes. I prefer the peep sights on my 4 mk 1.

Enjoy!

For a simple yet not permament mod that reaaly works go with the MOJO peep sight for the SMLE III I got to fire my buddies and I will be getting one for my 1940 Lithgow.

Even better, troll eBay and snag a receiver-mounted rear sight like a Parker-Hale, Mues, or Central. They replace the safety spring, are completely adjustable, and look much better on your rifle than the Mojo sights.

Nice snag.

I love the Lithgow's.

I shot 30 rounds through her today.

I was able to ring steel on both my 10" and 6" plate at a 100 yards every shot. I don't mind the sights, but will be checking eBay for a Parker-Hale or the like.

I'm pleased all around.

Would someone in the know recommend as to whether keep it as it is or if refinish it a bit.

I was thinking about doing some sanding and hand rubbing on the stock. Also, if I could find a longer SS tank, I would be set up for parkerizing.

Blasphamy! Sure, clean it up a bit - but please don't direspect that old warhorse with sandpaper & parking!

I used Murphry's Oil soap & a plastic scrubbie to clean up my stock - and then a little rub of BLO.  Just CLP, oil & elbow grease on the metal.

Trust me - it will look great - like the been there, done that old soldier it is.

Of course it's your rifle so you can do as you please. Just my 2 cents.
