Two very similar-looking trigger groups.  The one on the bottom has an additional "disconnecter" or something on the left side that appears to only release the hammer after the trigger has been released.  It says "SPEARS" on it.  What gun/s do these go to?  Why are they different?

Both are Remington auto shotgun trigger units, probably for the Model 1100.
The lower unit has a special "release trigger" modification made by  Spears in Abbyville, Kansas.

This was a modification some trap or skeet shooters used.  They preferred to RELEASE the trigger to fire instead of PULL the trigger to fire.
They'd get ready for the bird by pulling the trigger, then fire the gun by releasing the trigger.
If the shooter decided not to fire, the trigger could be re-set, usually by pressing the slide lock to disengage the trigger WHILE the trigger was held back.

These triggers are VERY unsafe unless the shooter knows it's a release trigger, so they were usually marked so unwary people would know what it was. Often they'd have some sort of easily visible marking on the receiver. Either that, or the owner was very careful to never allow anyone else to handle it.
You occasionally hear of one of these modified guns turning up in the hands of the unwary after the owner passed it on and somewhere along the line, what it was was forgotten.

Thanks.  Are these things caliber specific?  Do you know how to tell which caliber?
