I'm looking for a new carry knife, something that's great for every day carry, but that isn't HUGE.

I will also be carrying a gun.

The M21-04 (CRKT) Is my choice for EDC... Large (but not to big) and when opened the L.A.W.K.S. system makes it a virtual fixed blade. It is also deep bellied if you have a need for that.

I like spydercos and benchmades myself but CRKT are still a pretty decent choice.

I love the M21, going to buy both sizes, one EDC, one for the assault vest.

Any certain spyderco or benchmade?

I would recommend SOG for something in the $50-$100 range and Microtech Mini SOCOM Elite if you want to spend a little more. If autos aren't allowed in your state, they are also made in a manual version. Benchmade also makes a good variety of quality folders. Spyderco knives are well made, but I don't like their blade shapes or opening holes. A thumb stud is more positive and easier to use quickly, IMO.

The SOG Flash knives are good and very fast to open as they are "assisted."

I will never own another Spyderco, about 3 years ago i was using a Spyderco Toad and the lock failed and almost cut my thumb off... I have a huge scar across my right thumb from the second knucle to the tip. It didnt do any pemanent damage but it certainly scared me away from their knives.

PS. YES the lock was engaged... people are always saying it couldnt have been engaged or I was abusing the knife.

Tag because I need one too. I have had the following knives, but don't anymore for various reasons:

Benchmade 9050- great knife, just too big for me and illegal to carry in my state
Buck-Strider "Police"- too big, didn't care for the blade shape, and the grip tore my hand up everytime I tried to reach into my pocket for change
Kershaw Scallion- too small, nice knife though, would probably buy a larger version
S&W SWAT folder- total POS, wouldn't hold an edge for anything in the world, poor ergonomics

I find the knives with aluminum handles to be more comfortable than those with plastic or G10. Maybe that will help you out a little. MJD

Fixed or Folding?

I have moved away from Folders as they take up the same amount of space.

Lately been carrying an Atwood Bug Out Blade.
Its a short little blade but is extremely versitile, sharp and heavy duty!
Needless to say in a pinch it could work effectively as a defensive tool and alot fast than a folder anyday

ATWOOD makes some of the COOLESt knives/prybars!!
I am waiting to get a Goblin Tanto, and a Micro Card Knife
They are very cheap(price not quality), rugged, reliable, and beautiful!

I always have a CRKT and my Kershaw Ken Onion on me. Love them both.

Sounds like CRKT is the favorite...?

If your going with CRKT I recently picked up one on eBay for 41.00 shipped. Thats about half what they run

I have 2 M21-04s and an M16 spear point... I carry an M21 the other stays in the truck and the GF has taken over the M16 cause its the best fit for her.

I really love HAKs to but if you want a nicer one the price can really get up there. They are very small and VERY deadly but they are not something I would use for an EDC...

I think i paid about 180 for my first one and its the equivalent to Black Rifle Disease

It is as close to the perfect all around knife for EDC as can be.

SOG Flash II - the assisted opening feature is sweet. Very easy to employ one handed and sharpens up quickly on a steel.

For the $50 - $75 range I'd get a Benchmade Griptilian. One of the best knives for the money I've ever seen, I prefer it over my Spyderco. I have lots of folders but Benchmades were only ones that actually made me say "wow" when I first got them.

If you have more money than that I'd go with the Benchmade 710.

I could not agree more. Good steel, great locking system, very reasonable price, Benchmade quality.

Buck/Strider/Tarani "882" folder.

The best knife I've ever owned.

Larger Side-
BM 710
Spyderco Manix
Spyderco Endura

Medium-
BM Osborne 943
SOG Flash II

Smaller-
Spyderco Delica
BM Mini-Griptillian
Spyderco Native

those are some of my favorites.

As far as bang for the buck. the Spyderco Native can't be beat, S30V blade steel and can be had for 40$ at Chinamart. The BM Mini Grip is also an amazing deal and can be found for mid 50$s online in 154CM, plus is has the Axis Lock

Bladetech. The BEST knife period I have ever handled for carry.

Emerson karambit is my daily knife as well, but it is strictly for self defense. No cutting open boxes, etc... with this knife.
