Just bought a Mossburg 500A pistol grip, 8 rd tube, 20" heat shield for home defense. I don't know how much the heat shield will aid in home defense but it came with it and looks cool so I'm not complaining.

My question is how well will the 500A with the aluminum receiver perform? I also plan on using it for fun in the woods target shooting, blowing up water jugs, ect.......

How heavy duty & reliable is it or can it be since it has an aluminum receiver and shoots 12 ga. shells (3")?

Thanks
JP

There's nothing at all wrong with the Mossberg.
Unless you're going to use it for heavy-duty clay bird shooting and put 25,00 rounds a year or more through it, or it's going to be used by street cops, it will last you a LONG time.

The Mossberg 500 won't stand up to the kind of use and abuse the military and police give a shotgun, which is why Mossberg introduced the stronger Model 590, and which is why American law enforcement use the Remington 870 Police model almost to the exclusion of all other brands.

Since you likely won't abuse it, it'll probably last you a life time.

Will it take being dropped on hard surfaces or being hit?

Thanks for the replie

I'm sorry but I don't agree with you, Mossbergs 500 will stand the same use and abuse as 590 and 870, Mossbergs 500 have been in service since the Vietnam war and they still are in Iraq, I've been abusing my Mossy 500 for over 15 years and the only parts replaced were to put accesories according to my line of work.

The main difference between the 500 and 590 is how the barrel attaches to mag tube, 500 does it with a bolt through the tube which doesn't give you a chance to increase mag capacity, the 590 has a nut system similar to Remington 870.

I have to disagree a little with you. The military went with a 590A1 with a much heavier barrel and receiver. I have both 500's and 590A1 as well as the 870.

The only thing replaced on any of the 500's other than a 18inch barrel and shurefire forearm has been the old style recessed plastic safety. 20yrs on the 1st 500 and it still bust clay birds with the best of 'em.

Fear not, it'll be fine! May not be the gem that ppl praise the 870 of being but it is a fine tool.

Thanks for the replies fellas, I will keep her for messing arround & home defense and maybe after I finish paying off the King Quad I'll see if I can get my hands on a nice 590 a1 or 870

Thanks
