Has anyone seen or got info on the Mausers in .308 cal for sale by various dealers including R-GUNS ???
Their add says something about needing to be looked at by a qualified gunsmith BEFORE firing

I would love a descent surplus bolt gun in 30.06 but cannot find one for under $300
A mauser in .308 would be OK I think R-guns wants $129 or so .
Another dealer that offered these stated they were rebarrelled by the Israelies in the 50s then sold to Chilie or some other S.American country and not in good condition .

Any info or comments please .

I have a 308 Isreali 98k that I got from SOG about a year ago, well used and not the prettiest thing but it shoots ok. The Isreali's really used the hell out of them, all the ones that I have seen where similiar or worse than mine in condition....

I would stay away from R-GUNS. Do a quick search and find out why.

Take a look at the Spanish FR8's if you want a 98 Mauser in 7.62mm...

If you just want an old mil surplus that shoots 308, there's also the Enfield Ishapore 2A No.1 MKIII. They were made in the 1960's to early 70's in India, and are even still in use by the Indian army. Considering it has a 12 round mag, made with modern steel, and uses the proven Enfield design, I don't think you can go wrong. I've seen several at shows for $150-175. I would'nt buy one unless I could give it a good look over, most are WELL worn, many are are just plain wore out, many still, were poorly stored, and are heavily rusted under the stock, the Enfield may be the way to go, most of these are in very good shape and were decently cared for,and are reasonably priced

I say go for the Ishapore .308 from Navy Arms. Mine out of the box outshoots my Springfield M1A. They are in nice shape.

Below is a "report" from an other board. The author of the link bought a .308 Mauser from Rguns and gives a detailed report on the rifle that he bought.

www.gunboards.com/forums/UltraBoard.cgi?action=Read&BID=6&TID=6428&P=1&SID=1113650#ID1

I bought a Model 1908 Short Rifle that was Israeli converted to 7.62x51 (.308) locally for under $200.

I also bought a FR-8 for under $175.00 (includes shipping + transfer fee) off of gunbroker. The stock has a few dents, and the metal is about 60%, but still a good rifle.

Last month I bought a Springfield Armory 1903 with a mint 42 SA barrel, and 4x Weaver scope for $150. The rifle was sporterized, via a cut down stock and drilled / tapped for scope mount. This is a solid entry level gun of high quality. The only draw back on this one is that it is a low serial number 699xxx.

I have also picked up several sporterized 1903A3's in the past couple of years for $100 to $200. I feel that if you do not want a collector rifle, these common sporter Springfields are the way to go.

Actually took mine out to the range and shot it today, shot some nice 2.5" 5 shot 100 yd groups ! Mine was built on a 1936 S/42 ( mauser production ) recvr, painted in big letters on the stock is 1715 XELA, after doing some research XELA turns out to be some big town in Guatamala, So perhaps my well used Ex Isreali mauser did in some Palestinians/ sand people and some leftist SA scumbags !!!
